Surveyor-General, sent through Sir Julius Yogel, showing an effective mode of destroying rabbits with snares and traps, and a repetition of ' the ' £5000 reward for the manufacture of the first 500 tons beetroot sugar grown in the Middle Island. Napier, Saturday. At the annual meeting of the Napier Athenaeum last night it Was proposed to open the reading room on Sunday afternoons. The Bishop of vVaiapu strongly protested against it, and urged that it would be the means of the withdrawal of many subscribers. - Colonel Lambert would be sorry to propose anything injurious to the public morality, but if a few straitlaced people withdrew their support he would make up the difference out of his own pocket. The proposal was carried, the Bishop alone dissenting. Westport, Saturday. At 3-30 this morning the Wharf Hotel in Palmerston-st. was discovered to be on fire and, despite the efforts of the Fire Brigade, in less than an houi it was totally destroyed together with the stock and nearly all the furniture. ! Mr Brenkley, the landlord, with his family escaped. The fire originated at the rear cf the premises. The origin is unknown. The insurances are ; building £250, stock and furniture £50 in the South British. Chiustcuurch, Saturday. The Kaiapoi woollen factory has been purchased from the present proprietor, J. T. Peacock, by a company who propose extending operations. It is stated that Mr Peacock's profits reached 25 per cent, per annum on the capital invested. A new Railway Company with a capital of £100,000 is being floated. It is proposed to construct branch iines from liakaia to the Great South Railway, to Mount Hutt, Alford Forest, and Mount Soniers.
