[PRESS AGENCT.] Wellington, Thursday. At the inquest on the bodies of William Hawkins and John McGoveru who were drowned iv tbe Runanga river, the evidence showed that the deceased and a man named Dongerty had dinner at Mauriceville and five drinks each. When they started for Masterton McGovern was drunk. At the river Dongerty McGovern and Hawkins went in to ford it together, McGovern heing between the other two fell dragging the others with him, Dongerty was pulled ont senseless and the two others were drowned. Seats in the Legislative Council have been offered to, and accepted by Mr P. A. Buckley, solicitor, Wellington, Mr John Martin, Wellington, and Mr Thomas Henderson, Auckland. A similar offer has also been made to Mr James Dilhvorth, of Auckland. It is understood that Sir George Grey's health has much improved during the last few days.

Ddnedin, Thursday. The office of the Puhlic Works department for the Middle Island is to be located at Dunedin.

Grahamstown, Wednesday. Tbe Lands Court gave judgment for the Crown for 54,000 acres at Arohoa, the Bloomhall block, granting to the opponents, whose case was urged by Hone Nahe and Taipari, a reserve of 7000 acres. The Government were prepared, through their agent, to give these climants a reserve. The land is subject to £2000 advanced to the natives. Auckland, Thursday. Mr M'Minn has been elected for Waipa by a majority of 41 over Mr Whitaker. Ahaura, Wednesday. Charles Nygreeti^, an Australian by birth, for whose apprehension a warrant was issued some months ago for stabbing Mrs Eliza Smith at Kumara at Christmas, was tracked and yesterday arrested at Black Bull Reefs in this district. Prisoner has been taken to Greymouth. Mrs Smith was dangerously wounded, and even now suffers from the effects of the stab. Thursday. The first pile of the Little Grey Junction Bridge was driven home yesterday amidst great rejoicing. The Ahaura bridge is to be commenced in six weeks. They are the two most important public works yet undertaken in the Grey Valley. Blenheim, Wednesday. A slight railway accident occurred this morning to a train. When approaching the Spring Creek station, it slowly came against a partially opeued switch ard the engine stuck fast, and its weight severed the rotten sleepers, and bent the sockets. The manager and passengers, seven in all reached Opawa on a trolly. The driver and guard were a good deal shaken. A subsequent investigation shows that the accident was caused by foul play, and with evident intention to throw the engine off the rails. It sustained, however, no injury. Pokt Chalmers, Wednesday.
