A little girl named Laura Keele, about three years of age, had a narrow escape from being burnt to death this afternoon. It appears that she was playing ia front of the fire in Mrs Hurley's house ia Bridge-street, when her dress caught fire. She ran outside and was seen by Mr Bartlett, a shoemaker Hying on the opposite side of the street, and he ran across, and with great presence of mind tore off his leather apron and wrapped her tightly in it, thus extinguishing the flames. The whole of her dress and pinafore were burnt, but strange to say she escaped without any injury whatever. A report of Mr Hursthouse's meeting at Motueka on Monday eight will be found on the fourth page. , A beport of a presentation to the Rev. Father Garin by the pupils of St. Mary's schools, on the occasion of his entering upon his 69th year, reached us too late for publication to-day. Wje see by the Southland Times that Mr A. D.
