The following further reports have been received from New Caledonia, dated Noumea June 29th:— The native revolt took place in the districts of Ourail and Boularpari, distaut 90 and GO miles respectively from here, on the 25 th instant. The first intimation of the outbreak which reached Noumea was a report that five gendarmes on guard at JFou, a river near Ourail bad been attacked and murdered, and next, that a murderous assault had been made upon the " Galons" farmers, and every white resident in the neighborhood of Ourail. The Government immediately telegraphed for troops who were despatched to the scene of the conflict. On the following day news was received that the envirous of Ourail were in flames, twenty-one whites were known to be massacred, and the revolt was spreading tewards Boulerpari, 30 miles nearer to Noumea. On the 27th intelligence came of the massacre of the Galons, and other residents at Bonlarpari and the surrounding districts, fugitives were beginning to arrive in town, and the excitement was intense aud verging, during the day, on a panic. Mounted volunteers, armed by the Government, arrived to find the place iv ashes, and corpses lying in eVery direction, cut and backed horribly, family after family were found murdered, aud lying in heaps, no mercy having been shown. Men, women, and children who had been treacherously surprised were alike victims. The Canala natives are taking up arms against the re- ! volted tribe headed by their great chiefs, ' Gelmah and Kaka. The military, gen- , darineS) and a large number of armed civiHans are now in pursuit, and 150 friendly natives are aiding to surround the rebels. News from Boulerpari states that the natives made an attack on a band of convicts, seeing them guaraeci by only four sailors. The convicts were, however, all brought in except oue who Avas killed. The sailors killed eight natives. Information has been received of the utter destruction of the large village of Narai by our men. Eugene, a friendly chief in the Paita district, captured six revolted natives and delivered them to the military by whom they were executed.— July stb. •There is no extension of the revolt. The Kanats are being gradually hemmed in on all sides. A large military camp is to be formed at BouJarpari Noumea is now perfectly calm.— July 7th. The latest news is that eighty-four houses belonging to the rebel natives had been burnt near Boularpari, and thatjsome captives were taken aud executed. The names of nearly one^hundred victims to the savages are given. Wellington, "Wednesday. Over two thousand children from the Wellington public schools were present at the theatre yesterday on the occasion of tbe distribution of prizes by tre Governor. Christchurch, Wednesday. Several of those originally selected to practise for the football match with Otago being unable to go to Dunedin, some second class players have had to be added to the list. The Government land sales still continue remarkably good. The amount realised on Monday was £14,947, and on Tuesday £439. The Charitable Aid Board have entered into their work iv a very energetic manner. It is expected that a considerable reduction may be made in the expenses of the hospital without impairing its efficiency. It has been been resolved that as there are now 38 aged aud infirm persons, solely dependent on charity, and as the number will be sure to increase, a permanent home be erected for them.
