Mr John Henderson, oDe of the commission appointed by the Government to report upon the Timaru Harbor Works, charged £1000 for his services ! A writer in the Asburton Post says that " for downright hard swilling, that little town could hold it own against the universe. One may see them here drinking like whales any hour, from six in the morning till eleven at at night." No less than 700 double-furrow ploughs have been manufactured by Messrs Reid and Grey, at their Dunedin factory since last harvest. About 300 hundred of these have been made for Canterbury. They have orders at present on hand for about 100 more, and expect to turn out quite 1000 before the cud of the season. The mistakes that sometimes occur in the transmission of telegrams are often very amusing. The other . day a telegraphic message was sent from the police department at Napier to a constable at Wairoa who had just been admitted into the force. The message was to the effect — " Get form of oath from Major Goring, aud swear in today." The telegram the new constable received was—" Get form of oats from Major Goring, and shew it to-day." On receiving this order, the constable bought 'ten bushels of oats, which he duly submitted for the inspection of the Major.
