At a meeting of the provisional directors of the West Wanganui Coal Company, it was agreed to invite tenders in the colony for the construction of a steam collier capable of carrying 300 tons of coal. It was stated that so good a demand existed for the coal that several cargoes could be sold at once. To-night' 3 Gazette gives the Customs revenue at the several ports in New Zealand for the financial year ending June 30th, as follows :— Auckland, £210,042 ; Thames £8,620 ; Russell, £1,076 ; Mongonui, £367 ; Hokianga, £1,596; Kaipara, £311; Tauranga, £1,458 ; Poverty Bay, £10,792 ; New Plymouth, £8,728 ; Wanganui, ' £23,601 ; Wellington, £185,883 ; Napier, £40,706 ; Wairau, £5,279 ; Picton, £1,011 ; Havelock, £802 ; Ivaikoura, £982 ; Nelson, £d 5,041 ; Westport, £J3,416; Greymouth, £39,277 ; Hokitika, £29,619 ; Lyttelton. £223,458 ; Akaroa, £82 ; Tiiaaru, £18,396 ; Oamaru, £15,140 ; Dunedin, £356.223 ; Invercargill, £38,727 ; Riverton, £3,724. The revenue for the last quarter was £303,544, and for the corresponding quarter of the previous year £303,550. Mr George Thomas reports flour, Adelaide £17 10s to £18; Colonial £12;* pollard £7 £7 10; bran Is6d; wheat 4s 4d; bacon 8d; hams 9d; cheese 7Jd, maize 6s ; potatoes £3 15s; butter 10d; oats 4s 6d to 4s 9d. Friday. The Loan and Mercantile Agency, under date London 16th July, reports as follovvs.— The wool market is unchanged ; for tallow there is a fair trade demand, mutton is worth 395, and beef 37s per cwt. The wheat market is quiet. The weather is favorable for the crop here. Adelaide is worth 50s and New Zealand 45s per 496 lbs. The leather market is quiet ; best sides y^d per lb. Christciiurcii, Thursday night. In the Supreme Court yesterday, Chapman, a woolsorter, sued Sir Cracroft Wilson for £1000 for malicious prosecution. Some time ago Sir C. Wilson laid an information against Chapman for stealing wool, and he was committed for trial, but on coming before the Supreme Court was acquitted In the present case the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for £150 and costs. Hoff was charged at the Oxford Magistrate's Court yesterday with murdering his wife on July 8, and was committed for trial. His demeanor in Court was very quiet, aud he showed very little disposition to cross examine the witnesses. At various points of the evidence he nodded his assent to the correctness of the testimony. When his wife was stated to have been kind to him he gave a negative shake of his head, and smiled in a cynical manner. When the medical evidence, was given, in which it was stated that the wouuds which caused death were administered by either a shingling hammer, cleaver, or tomahawk, he pointed to the head of the latter, from which the handle had been burnt as the instrument with which the deed was committed. Hoff never seemed fully to realise his position. lie reserved his statement of the affair until he ia brought before the Supreme Court. Auckland, Thursday night. Large quantities of grain and breadstuffs have been exported this month, and several vessels are loading here at present. Wanoanui, Friday. The schooner Maiden City, with railway material from Wellington, is ashore a quarter of a mile north of the Heads. She was fouad during the Bight to be in a sinking condition, having sprung a leak, so she was run ashore about four this morning. This is the third shipping disaster here within a week,
Waitara, Friday. A smart shock of earthquake was felt here about a quarter past seven this morning. Dunbdin, Thusday night. Friday. Mr Thomson M.H.R. addressed a meeting of electors at Kaihaku He dwelt at length upon the various political questions of the day, notably the land question, education, extension of the franchise, incidence of taxation. He strongly advocated the separation of the North andftSoiith Islands* remarking that the latter island would benefit to au incalculable degree by the change. He also expressed himself in favor of the seat of Government being at Christchurch instead of Wellington. He declared himself to be & stauuch support of the present Government but at the same time he reserved to himself the right to hold his own opinions on political measures no matter whether these measures were favored by the Government or not.
