MO TUEKA.
(Phom Ova Own Correspondent.) Moideka, July 17. Our usual monthly Court was held to-day. In the case of Pattie v. Thomas (Mr Bunny for the defendant) judgment was deferred.— Stanton v. Morley, judgment summons for £5 13s fid. Judgment for plaintiff, the amount to he paid in monthly instalments, or in default one month's imprisonment. The presiding Justices were Messrs Parker Macmahon, and Tarrant. We are enjoy ing the pleasant change from the late wretched weather. The riper haa heen higher than at any time since the February flood of la3t year, aud a considerable quantity of debris in the 6hape of timber lodged agaiust the piers of the new bridge, which is now being cleared away, but beyond the loss of a little timber by the contractor, no damage has been done, although the river shows a alight tendency to encroach on the Motueka side, in fact, the large stream is now on this side. The new lock-up was unfortunately used last night, but only by the courtesy of the contractor, Mr Coombes, as it is not quite finished, and therefore not yet handed over to the authorities, the occupant being the man Alexander Johnson, who was sentenced to four months' imprisonment. A lock-up is not often wauted in Motueka, but still I suppose the necessity shows an advance in civilization. We are all glad to hear that the timber (or a nortion of it) is in situ for the Stratford's Creek bridge. The recent heavy weather has caused the roads to be very bad, and has almost stopped the running of our very useful overland mail coach, and the Barkly being laid up at the same time has made it very inconvenient for would-be travellers, but the tremendous clearing up shower on Sunday washed off the mud, and a strong southerly wind following dried the roads in a marvellous manner, so that traffic is now more easy. Our vital statistics for the quarter ending June 30 are, births 22, deaths 5, marriages 2.
