[PRKBS AGENCV.] Wellixgtox, Tuesday. Robert Fitzgerald, son of Mr ,T. E. Fitzgerald, died last night. lie had been playing a match at football a short time ago, when he met with a slight injury to his chest, and had never been well since. VVestport, Monday. The cause of the stranding of the p.s. Result, at Karainea, was no light being shown at the signal station. Warden Broad, Postmaster Shrimpton, and Mr Alex Stitt> of Westport were among the passcugers. All were safely landed, but they suffered much from exposure. Wanganui, Monday. The three-masted schooner Ellerton, from Auckland, was signalled yesterday outside the Heads, lying safely at anchor. During the night the anchors must have dragged, for this morning she was discovered amongst the breakers, riding heavily at anchor, bows on to the surf half-way down the South Spit, in a dangerous position, but the wind having moderated there is a chance K of getting her off. The schooner Forest Queen is in a very dangerous position above the bridge, the wind failed in passing through, and this morning a strong fresh carried her against the piles, heeling her over to such an extent as to threaten a capsize. Her foremast being cut away saved the vessel. The forepart is now under the bridge, still in a dangerous position. She is unable to discharge on the bridge, and lighten, as the cargo is too heavy. r \v. Tuesday. Last afternoon about five o'clock the EHerton went ashore. During the clay there was a fresh in the river, which rose to such an extent as to render it impossible to send assistance. The anchors were still dragging during the afternoon, and the vessel was getting worse in the break, and at four o'clock the captain shipped the anchors, and tried to make sail, the wind then blowing off the shore. The surf, however, drove her broadside on to the shore. The Clyde went down but could do nothing, and soon after a heavy sea struck the schooner and caused her to slew bows on to the shore. When the men found she was beached they took a boat and came off, The owner, Mr lioss, and the captain remained on board all night. At midnight the vessel beached high up the Spit No serious damage is done. She is insured for £1000, but there is no insurance on the cargo. Auckland, Monday. In the Police Court to-day, Crow, charged with maliciously assaulting Harry Broome, prize fighter, with a billhook in a brothel, was remandedfor a week. Broome's recovery is expected unless erysipelas supervenes. Crow has previously been convicted fifteen times for drunkenness, larceny, and other offences. A fire occurred at Newtown this morning, which destroyed a large dwelling house in Dublin-3treet, occupied by two married couples named Glading and Harrison, the property of John Jeffrey, and several adjoining buildings were greatly endangered, but the fire was prevented from spreading by the efforts of the Newtown and Auckland fire brigades. The occupants escaped with their lives. No furniture was saved. The building was insured in ihe South British for £125. Supreme Court civil sittings : the case of De Thierry v. Fitzgerald is proceeding. The plaintiff claims £500 commission for negotiating the sale of a block of six thousand acres at Okahakuru. Christchurcii, Tuesday. In the Supreme Court a man named Rankin sued the Norwich Union Insurance Company for £100, being the unpaid balance on a fire insurance policy. In 1875 Eankin insured his house for £500 with the Company, and in 1877 the house was burned down, when the Company refused to pay more than £400 on the ground that the amount tendered by them was the full value of the house. After hearing the evidence the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for the full amount with interest and costs, Timothy Houlahan, an elderly man, has been committed for trial on a charge of rape on a girl under eight years of age. Several case3 against persons for keeping kerosene for sale without branding the same "dangerous" have been dismissed with a caution to the defendants.
