Note to my Customers and the Public in the matter of Kerosine Oil and its safety or otherwise. f*\ USTOMEES who use the higher priced oils, which I have always recom\J mended in preference to the ordinary qualities, may rely on their being perfectly safe, as they are pronounced by authorities here and elsewhere to be far above the legal standard of inflammability. The ordinary qualities of Oil imported into New Zealand, in reference to the testing ot which so much has of late been reported in the newspapers, may be as a rule sufficiently safe to stand the test required by English law, viz 100 degrees, but may not reach the New Zealand standard of 110 degrees Unfortunately there have been exceptions. ; Badly trimmed lamps, and dirty burners, are a much greater source of danger [ than the use of oil ranging in fire test from 100 to 110 degrees. I A simple test, slightly altered from Downer's pamphlet, is here submitted, that ■ consumers may judge for themselves as' to the kinds of oil they are using. TEST Take a cup or tumbler, fill it nearly full of water warmed so that a thermometer inserted therein shows a mean temperature of 110 degreeß, pour a small quantity of oil on the water, stir a little, then pass a lighted match quickly but closelyjover the surface of the oil once ;if it ignites do not use the oil, it ia unsafe ; if it does not ignite it can be safely used. Youra 'respectfully, 'n -a f «■ at , t W ' a WILKINS. Bridge-street, Nelson, June, 1878.
