At one of the principal polling booths in the Taieri yesterday, the Returning Officer locked the door and went for his dinner, in consequence of which some of the electors were unable to gain admittance to the polling booth. At the Upper Hutt this morning while a teamster named Maybey was driving a team of three horses towards the Upper Hutt railway station, they broke away from him and got on to the railway line gallopiug in front of the Kaitoki ballast engine. They were run into by the engine, and two of the horses were killed outright, and the third so badly injured that ifc had to be shot. The Kennedy sails for Nelson at 8 p.m. Passengers: Mr and Mrs Pickett and family, Miss M'Hugh, Messrs Fletcher and Wymond.
