An inquest was held yesterday on the body | of Martin John O'Connell, Captain of the schooner Josephine, who was killed on the i railway near the Heathcote station on Thursday night. The evidence showed that the deceased was under the influence of liquor, and tried to jump on to the train while in -motion, but probably stumbled over the signal wires and was dragged some distance by the train. When found he was quite dead. A verdict of "accidental death" was retnrned. It is proposed to establish a Gas Company atAshburton. The Board of Governors of the Canterbury College yesterday evening negatived a proposal to create a scholarship in connection with the Agricultural College. k A tender has been accepted for the new i wing of the Canterbury College to cost £4,078. Monday. Last night some one got into the vestry of St. John's Church and broke open the cupboard and a small cabinet in the hope of finding the communion plate and money, but to no purpose as these are always kept in the parsonage. Wellisgtox, Saturday night. Arrangements have been wade between the Government and the Corporation, by which the Government agree to sell the Thorndon reclamation to the city upon payment of £89,000. This sum is to be in payment in full of all charges. The Government, moreover, promises to introduce a Bill into Parliament to enable the Corporation to carry on the purchase. The extent of street frontage in the reclaimed land is 7620 feet. Captain Holmwood of the Hyderabad and the members of the Underwriters' Association conferred to-day as to the advisability of attempting to get the ship off, and it was decided to make an effort, which it is thought may be successful provided no unfavorable change in the weather takes place. The National Bank has received advices of the floating' of the Water Works loan, and £25,500 have been placed to the credit of the city. Papers by the mail state that Mr Yesey Stewart has sold all his property in Te Awatu a auction for £11,900 Monday. William O'Connor, who was found guilty of attempting to poison William Light, was brought up for sentence thia morning. The prisoner made a long statement lasting about an hour and a half, with the view of showing that he could not have been guilty, and called several witnesses to testify to his good character, including Superintendent Shearman. The prisoner several times called heaven to witness that he was innocent of the crime of which he had' been, found guilty. The Chief Justice after a few brief remarks sentenced him to ten years penal servitude. Timahu, Saturday night Batsman is scratched for the Timaru Handicap at the Steeplechase Meeting. At a meeting of stewards last night it was decided to erect a Grand Stand capable of holding 250 persons. Wheat continues dull, an d the market is without any signs of activity.- Oats are firm • inferior, 2s lod; best, 3s 6d. A few parcels lately changed hands at 4s ; nominal 3s 6d to 4s 7d. The remains of a large cuttle Ssh have been picked up in Caroline Bay. One arm was four feet long. Two men engaged in sinking near Orrasley's Mill having got 60 feet deep suddenly struck water, which spouted . up 30 feet.
