On William O'Connor being brought up in the Supreme Court for sentence for attempt to murder by administering poison, he asked the Judge to remand the sentence for a short time to enable him to call witnesses as to character namely, Mr Sherman, Commissioner of Police, whom he had known for 21 years, and Messrs Fox and Lawson. The Judge then postponed sentence till Monday, when O'Connor said, "I will then state full particulars of this affair before this Court and your Honor, and then it will be seen who is the guilty party." The members of the Wellington bar presented him with a complimentary address, and the members of the local press also made him a handsome present. On the case of Macassey v Reid and Reid v Macassey being called this morning, the Attorney General said that he appeared, not as counsel, but as a friend of both parties, and had to state that through the intervention of friends it had been agreed to withdraw both informations.
