GREAT SALE OF DIAMOND JEWELLERY IN MELBOURNE.

[From the Sydney Morning Herald.] The sale of Dr. Beaney's diamonds, estimated at £15,000 value, took place at the Melbourne Athenaeum recently, and the whole realised about £10,000. The auctioneer stated that all were guaranteed Brazilian diamonds, and that nothing would be offered which was not bonafide Dr. Beaney's. By far the most important lot was the chain of diamonds, which was 6aid to have cost £5000 in itself. This went for £1550 to Mr. Solcberg. Next came a magnificent chain of gold and diamonds, with a pendant representing a pencil case of rubies and diamonds. Mr. Nathan was the purchaser for £370, the cost being stated at £1000. Following this in value with a diamond ring, three diamonds (eighteen carats), knocked down for £300 to Mr. Dennis, the original cost having been £700. Two more diamond rings, which each cost £600, went to the same purchaser for £210 each. A gold snuff-box, with the docter's monogram in diamonds, fetched £47, the cost being £170, and Mr, Brown, sen., builder, was the purchaser. Mr. Solcberg bought, for £205 each, two solitaires and a neck stud, all uniform with basket gold work, and very large single diamonds, the cost having been £600 each. Mr. Watson, of Sandhurst, got a remarkably nice gold chain, imitation rope, for £29, the gold alone being worth £28 at per weight, and Dr. Beaney had given over £100 for this article. The rings were pufc up as the doctor's favorites, being those he commonly wore together on one finger. They are respectively diamond, diamond and sapphire, and diamond and emerald. The lot went for £78, which the dealers present said was very cheap. A gold square locket, with a most beautiful diamond, fetched £100. Another had multifarious little diamonds in a star, and a large assortment of rings and studs were all disposed of. The rings numbered over 30, nearly all with diamonds.
