MAGISTRATES' COURT.

[Before the Hod. N. Edwards and J. R Dodsou, Esq., J. J.P.] Abusive Language.

Henry Bailey, proprietor of the Golden Jjleece Hotel, who had been summoned to appear on the information of F. H. Hingston upon the charge of uaing obscene lacguage in Waimea-street on Friday evening last, did not put in an appearance when called upon, and their Worships decided to adjouru the Court for half aa hour, and issue a warrant for his arrest.

On the Court resuming, the defendant, who appeared to be suffering very much irom the effects of drink, was brought up in custody, and on the charge being read to him, pleaded guilty. The Bench stated that they had better hear the facta. Mr Bunny, who appeared for the complaisant, called

F. H. Hingston, who stated that on Friday evening last about half-past eight, he and his family were disturbed by the defendant's wife rushing into their house asking for protection from her husband, who was close behind her. It took five people to keep the defendant out of the house, and while he wa» endeavouring to force an entrance he made use of most foul and disgusting language. On the defendant being asked if he wished to ask the witness any questions replied " I am not fit to keep a public-house, and' he's cot fit to keep a store."

The Chairman addressing the defendant said : You, an old policeman, ought to know better than to be guilty of such conduct You hav« also this morning treated the Court with disrespect in not appearing without a warrant. The case being a bad one the Bench fine you £5 and costs X2 17s' or in default one month s imprisonment. '
