In the bupreme Court to-day in the case of Adolphus Frederick Hardy, who was committed at Gisborne to take his trial at Wellington for striking, and knocking some teeth out of a man who cursed Her Majesty the Queen, the Grand Jury made a presentment stating that the charge was without a tithe of evidence to support it, and that the country should nerer have been put to so unnecessary an expense in sending such a case for trial. In his charge to the Grand Jury Judge Gillie 3 congratulated them on the diminution of crime, there being only eleven prisoners, charged with thirteen offences, none of them serious, and at the same time the number of prisoners in gaol being less than on any former occasion. He .hoped this indicated a permanent decrease of crime. In one case a Maori woman charged a Maori with an offence on the person, and the Judge hoped this showed a disposition on the part of the natives to appeal to the law instead of resortiug to violence. Dunedin, Tuesday. The election resulted in a majority for Mr Ollivier of 111. The voting being •— Ollivier 769; Reeves 658. Mr OllirieY's party worked very hard. Scarcely a Q effort was made on bahaif of Mr Beeves. In the Supreme Court, the following sentences -were passed :— Robert Gardner for larceny, 9 months ; Henry Page South, for larceny, 6 montha ; Thomas George Smith for incendiarism, 4 years; Henry Sutherland, for larceny, two years ; William Ruasell charged with larceny was acquitted This concluded the calendar. Ihe former, an old offender, was sentenced to H years, and the latter to twelve months David Wrigtel, for passing a valueless cheque, got 12 mouths. James Woodford 58 years of age, formerly third master of the East Chnstchurch school, charged with committing a rape on one of the scholars, aged tsn years, was found guilty andCsentenced to ten years. The Grand Jury found a true bill against Mrs Steele for the murder of her son.
