A report of a presentation to Mr W. Price and some correspondence are unavoidably held over until Monday, A meeting of the" Aid Society was held yesterday afternoon to considet the Government proposals re charitable aid. There were present : The Bishop of Nelson (in the chair), Archdeacon Thorpe, Revs. A. M. Garin, P. Calder, and R. Bavin, Judge Broad, Dr. Boor, and Mr Hunter Brown. It was resolved almost unanimously not to accept the Government proposals. a* The Customs receiots for the month ending to-day amounted to £3174 7s Bd, made up of the following items :— Spirits, £822 83 3d ; cigars, £25 7s 6d ; tobacco, £176 7s 6d ; wine, £76 4s 4d ; beer, £47 4a 6d ; tea, £277 8s 6d ; coffee, £18 4s ; sugar, £229 13s 4d ; weight, £46 9a 9d; ad valorem, £185 12s 8d ; other duties, £47 1 7s - other receipts, £1219' 9s lOd. Total, £3174 7s Bd. The receipts for the week were £1379 6s 9d. A telegram just received by H. D. Jackson, the agent of the Union Insurance Company, states that the balance-sheet of the said company, just issued, shows : Receipts, £43,335 2s 2d; losses, expenses, re-insurance, &e., £29,192 17s ld ; leaving ; a balance of profit of £14,142 5s id, which, considering that the expenses of new comdanies are always heavy at the commencement, may be regarded as a very satisfactory statement. Tub anniversary of the Congregational Church Sunday School is to be celebrated next week. Special sermons will be preached to-morrow, and a tea and public meeting will he held on Thursday. Mr. Scaife, the local ageut for the Standard Insurance Company, requests us to contradict the statement that the re-insur-ance by the Victoria Company of £1000 on Mr Watkins' houae was effected with the Standard, that not being the case. Our information was obtained from Mr Moss Davis the Nelson agent for the Victoria Company! Mr. Newport yesterday shipped 3$ tons of copper ore from hia mine in the Maitai Valley, by the Tasso, for Newcastle, where it is to be smelted. This was taken out just as it came to hand, and the result of the test will be anxiously looked for by others besides the fortunate owner of the property.
