Wi mentioned last week that the Government intended to free themselves of the responsibility of dispensing charitable aid at the end of this month, and, in accordance with this intention, Colonel Whitmore last night forwarded the following telegram Tto the Mayor :— "ln relation to charitable aid, has your Borough taken any action in the direction of preparing to carry on after the Ist July ? If, either by a Benevolent Association or its own machinery, the Borough is prepared to undertake the distribution of charitable aid, I shall be ready, after the Ist July, to give every facility, and will hand over monthly, till organisation is completed and subsidies can be accurately computed, one-twelfth of the gros3 anm expended within the Borough this year in charitable aid." To tms the Mayor has replied as follows j— " In : reply to your^telegram, I beg to refer you to my letter of the 13th April. Your tele- : gram appears only to refer to temporary ; arrangement.
