TO THE EDITOR OF THE 'EVENING MAIL.'

Sir—Seeing our city papers team with advertisement and correspondence respecting the formation of a " Jam and Eruit Preserving Company," I am inclined to think that the same may prove a successful speculation if managed with economyeconomy in the true sense of the word, seeing that the tops of our mountains may be made prolific in producing fruit. .Were you to question a scho»l-boy as to the meaning of the word " economy," probably ho might tell you it is a word used by candidates at election times; but the true meaning of the word is good management and nothing more, aud for the want of the exercise of this economy all our Nelson formed companies hare been humbled to kiss the dust. Many years ago in New South Wales I knew a Government road party consisting of a superintendent, two overseeri,;and ope laboring man/ and he was a cripple', and most likely there was attached to this mighty establishment a cook, and a baker and butcher contractor, while the one armed laborsr did not earn three pence a day. Now this is the, way, with our Nelson companies, They hare been burdened with commanders with : none to command, wasting [the. company's substance in 'riotous living. ,If a man has a good appointment cronies and friends harass him forsonie easy billet, where they can act the genteel without capacity or perseverance. Now, this is what our new company must guard themselves against, and I have no doubt but good hard working women may be employed to great advantage, as this cla3s of employment is the. element of their existence. . ;. ..... . ■ lam,&c, .
