The Nelson Evening Mail WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1878.

From our Wellington exchanges we learn that the Government hare decided that after the 30th ipst., the work of distributing charitable aid will be thrown iipori the Municipalities and other local governing bodies. It is quite clear too that the work is not to be confined to " distributing," but that it is to include raising the funds prior to their distribution. This means either a large increase in the gifts of charitably disposed persons or the levying of a special rate for the relief of the poor. It is true that the Government proposes to subsidise, the locally raised fund by giving 20s for every pound so obtained, but this with the present amount subscribed by the public for charitable purposes would in Nelson, and we presume, in every other part of the colony, be utterly insufficient to meet the claims for assistance that have to be satisfied. It is all very well to talk about the community in New Zealand being in a flourishing and prosperous condition, no doubt it it so as a whole, but it cannot be denied that there are numerous cases of downright poverty, the sufferers by which are iv no way to blame for the misfortunes that have fallen upon them. These cannot be left to starve, but how their wants are to be relieved after the 30th of this month it is not easy to say. Probably in the town of Nelson the work of seeing that the funds at disposal are properly expended will be handed over by the Couacil to the Aid Society, but this is the easiest part of the task to be imposed upon the local governing bodies. In less than a fortnight's time they will have to decide, where these funds are to come from. ' " - The Australians appear to have met their match in the Gentlemen players of England, who disposed of their colonial antagonists' for 75 in the first innings, while they themselves had, when the telegram, which appears elsewhere, was despatched, scored 85 with the loss of only six wickets. It is a curious circumstance that nine out of the ten on the Australian side were caught out, only one being bowled, and that the whole of the six Englishmen were got rid of in the same way. An Auckland telegram, published to-day, states: that a telegram has been receiy.ed by the Chairman of the Manukau County Council from the Government, stating that no portion of the subsidy voted will > be handed over to Counties where the Act is not in full operation. We have not heard of a similar notice having been received by the Chairman of the Waimea County Council. A billiabd tournament, for which there are thirty entries, will be commenced at the Nelson Hotel this evening as soon as the handicap is completed. The reefs that are being worked in the Inangahua and Lyell districts continue to keep up their character for producing gold. Ihe week before last the Napoleon Hill Company washed out 60 ounces for the week, and last Friday they obtained 120 ounces more. May the enterprising companies now at worjc there long continue to prosper

Residents in and near Spring Groye, are reminded of the meeting to be held to-mor-row evening for the purpose of taking into consideration the. proposed changes in the schools. i Breathes there a man or woman afflicted •with kidney disease, Rheumatism, dyspepsia, nervousness, or debility, who would Mot pay liberally to be cured ? Many thousands do so without receiving the least benefit. To all who are thus afflicted, we take this opportunity of communicating what to the«n must indeed be "glad tidings of great joy>" viz.-, that there is an absolute specific for their various ills, to be had at very reasonable cost.
