MOTUE KA .
[From Our Own Correspondent.] June 17. We have had a deal of rain lately, but the river has not been high enough_to test the of the bridge/, which Construction is gradually creeping on towards Completion. : It will be a great convenience especially if the Motueka side -of the road to Takaka be j proceeded with. Then comes the carrying out of tin wharf into deep water (of course that will be against the interests of the town of Nelson ) At present out overland co nimunication is not complete. Stratford's Creek; is still unbridged, and although no lives have been lost in it yet, it is certainly a most dangerous stream. Aa Spring Grove bas risen as one man to memorialise for a Wairoa bridge, why should not a similar movement be made to render the Waimea Bridge thoroughly useful to us in Motueka, the Moutere, and Riwaka. It was only on Friday last that a man in attempting to cross this, at times, formidable water course, bad his led horse washed over the fence into a paddock beyond, while he himself ; bad a narrow escape of his life. Two other persons were only enabled to cross by taking the horse out of the cart and leading the former over the footbridge (I suppose they are liable to a penalty for this), and then by the j aid of ropes and the assistance of local resiJ dents they towed the cart through the foam- | ing torrent, and finally reached home, blessl ing the powers that be. Our port thia morning had a lively appearance, the Wallace t going out, the Barkly coming in, and two I sailing vessels lying alongside the wharf. Our principal exports at the present time ate timber and potatoes; imports, timber and iron. Mr Editor, please agitate for Stratford's Creek bridge.
