[press agency.] Wellington, Friday. A Gazette to-day notifies his Excellency's provisional acceptance of the nomination by the Consular-General of Erance in Sydney of Mr P. C. Neill to be Consular Agent at Dunedin for the whole of ;the Middle ißiand. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon the following resolution was passed.— "That it is expedient that a Committee of this Chamber do place themselves in communication with the City Council and the Government with a view of devising means for meeting the difficulties arising out of the presence in the city of a considerable stock of kerosene oil which has been reported to be dangerous, and to report the result to the Chamber as soon as possible." „ _ Saturday. Messrs Conyers and Lawson, the heads of the Railway Departments for the South and North Islands respectively, proceed to Auckland to-day for the purpose of examining the working o: the railways with a view to their improvements. The Government will issue on the Ist of July, two new postage stamps of the value of 2s and Ss respectively. It is probable that a new penny duty stamp of about half the size of the present one will be sold on the Ist proximo. _ . Waitara, Saturday. Rewi, with about one hundred followers, arrived within ten miles of Waitara yesterday. Eifty sheep, the property of Thomas Dailey, part of a flock being driven from Patea to Waitara have been seized at Parihaka as payment for passing through Maori territory. _ , Napier, Saturday. In the Supreme Court on Thursday, Frank Stodart was convicted of stealing £27 in money, and a diamond ring valued at £25, the property of Mr Dennett, of the Star Hotel, Napier. Yesterday he was sentenced to 18 months. John Peter Napolean, for forgery and larceny, was sentenced to two years. Dennis Shanahan, convicted of wounding with intent, to six months. Michael Griffin, charged with a criminal assault on a girl under age, was out on bail, but did not surrender. His Honor remarked it was the first instance of the kind in his experience. JphD Hardie Anderson, was convicted of embezzling moneys from David Berry, sentence wa3 deferred. His Honor said he would consider whether to reserve the case for tbe Court of Appeal on tbe point whether there could be felonious embezzlement in other cases than that of a servant. During the trial of this case a witness was committed to gaol for a week for coming into the box drunk. Samuel Carwell was convicted of larcenv of money and a watch at the Spit. Lawreuce, Saturday. The Tuapeka County Council yesterday appointed Mr Horace Bastings the Chairman, to represent the Council at the Conference to be held in Wellington. Favorable replies have been received from a number of counties to the proposal made by the Tuapeka Council to ask the Government to place all reserves under the charge of the counties. mL _ Greymouth, Saturday. The Bank of New Zealand shipped yesterday per Kennedy for Dunedin over £25,000 worth of gold. _, Dlnebin, Saturday. The Bruce Herald states that Mr Hemy Clarke, of Milton, will probably offer himself as a candidate for the Taieri district. Invercargill, Saturday. There ia very little business in wheat; which is quoted at 4s 6d to 4s 9d; oats are in great request principally for shipment to Melbourne. Quotations range from 3s to 3s Cd for good feed; no barley is offering. Christchurch, Saturday The deliveries from farmers are almost nil, the roads being too heavy for dray traffic. Wheat, 4s 9d to 4s lOd ; oats, 4s ; barley, scarce at 5s 6d to 6s ; flour, £12 to £13 bran, £5 ss ; sharps, £6 6s • cheese, 6id • butter, lOd ; hams and bacon, 7sd.
