The Nelson Evening Mail. WED JUNE 12, 1878.

Several timorous correspondents in the Wood have written asking us to protest against permission being granted by the City Council to a recent applicant to erect a slaughter house on the mudflat near the boundary between the town and Suburban North. We can assure them that they hare nothing to fear, for in the first place the Act of last session prohibits any such nuisance being established within half a mile of the boundary of any borough, and in the next w« feel certain that our City Councillors would never permit the poisoning of the sea breeze by the stench of offal. The monthly inspection of the Town and Port Volunteers will take place this evening at half-past seven. An inquest was held at Richmond by Dr. Boor, the coroner, on Monday on the recent fire by which Mr Croucher's flour mill waa destroyed on Friday night. There was little added to what has already been published with regare to the origin of the fire. Mr Croucher said that he had reason to suspect that some time ago persons made use of the loft in which the fire originated aa a sleeping place at night; that his boiler fires had not been lighted for two days, and although he had been dressing the stones by candlelight on the afternoon of the 'day on which the fire occurred, the boy who was working with him saw the candle put out at fire o'clock, after which hour no one was in the mill. The verdict was, as usual, that there waa no evidence to show the cause of the fire. The Bishop of Nelson delivered a most interesting lecture on the Catacombs of Rome at the All Saints' Church Institute last night.
