The Claud Hamilton arrived at the Bluff to-day, with one day's later news •— Melbourne, June 5. Dr,MacArtney who has had a chequered career as clergyman, barrister, Eiji planter, legislator, and teetotal lecturer, died [by poison on Sunday, thus creating a vacancy for South Gippsland. An inquest is being held on his remains, but is adjourned till an aualysis can be made. The entries for the Melbourne Cup number 108, which is fewer than last year, bnt the quality is better. There is only one aged horse on the list. There are two Traducer colts, which appear to hail from New Zealand. Miss Amy Sherwin, a Tasmanian prima donna has made a great success with the Italian Opera Company.
