One of the leading mercantile firms in Wellington completed the annual stock-taking on Saturday last with very satisfactory results. At the conclusion, the head of the firm very handsomely presented a cheque for £100 to be divided pro rala among the employees.— Post. One day last week, jewellery of the value of £20 was stolen from Mrs. Cotterell's residence in May-street, Thorndon, Wellington. A Dunedin .telegram to the Pout dated Wednesday last says : — The weather up country has beeu unusually severe. Miniug operations are entirely suspended, aud sheep are dying by hundreds. At Cardroha it snowed iucessantly for a whole week. All communication between Cardrona and the ojtside world has been suspended for nearly a fortnight. The Napier Telegraph of the 3lst ult. says: —Mr. G. E Barton, the Wellington barrister who has been for some few days residing at the Crown Hotel, Port Ahuriri, left yesterday for a trip up the East Coast. The lion, gentleman's object, we learn, is to obtain for himself an iusight into the native character, so as to be able to speak authoritatively in the House when native matters are brought up for discussion. A London telegram to the Post says: — In the cricket match, Australia v. Yorkshire, the best individual Australian scores were as follows : — C. Bannerman, 25; A. Bannerman, not out, 17; Horan, 31; Garrett, 26; Allan, not out, 11. The bowling and fielding of the Australians were very superior. Spofforth especially distinguished himself in bowling, and took 9 wickets, The Pout, apparently on good authority, says : — How much of the new loan has been anticipated, is a question which baa frequently been asked during the lasfe day or two ? We. believe that the matter stands thus :— Guaranteed debentures to the extent of £800,000, issued by the late Government, and. the loan of £1,000,000 obtained from the Bank of New Zealand and the Bank of New South Wales on short-dated debentures wilj absorb £1,800,000 out of the total £3,500,000. A sum of £300,000 must also be set aside to meet provincial liabilities which came to the General Government as a legacy from the provinces. This apparently leaves a balance of only £1,400,000 to meet the expenditure on public works during the year, but to this amount must be added £980,000 the balance remaining in hand on the 30th June, 1877, so that the actual sum available for public works during the year may be set down at £2,380,000. Of course, as the financial year closes on the 30th of the present month, and as a number of public works have been undertaken, with the sanctioa of Parliament, in anticipation of the loan being raised, it follows that a considerable portion of the money now made available has been forestalled, and io point of fact spent, in this way. What this may amount to we cannot yet say.
