Oamaiut, Thursday night. The adjourned inquiry into the cause of the receiit coach accident by which My JMcholls and young Maitlaud were killed took place to-day. Goddard, the driver, appeared m Court with his head bandaged up. He gave evidence that when the coach had dedecended the Horse Range about two or three hundred yards the trace of the off side pole horse came loose. This caused the horses to take fright and they broke into a gollap, and in crossing a water course on the road the coach jerked violently, and the king bolt came out. The brake had no control, and after going a short distance the coach capsized. The Jury returned a verdict " That Charles Nicholls and Jame Earnest Maitland met their deaths accidentally and that there is no blame attributable to the driver of the
coach,
Auckland, Thursday night. Arrived : Spirit of the Dawn, from London, with a general cargo valued at £26,000, 104 days from port to port, and 95 from land to land. She has no passengers. On May 2nd the after hatch and side of the gig were stove in.
Sailed : Hero for Melbourne with 50 passengers and four boxes of gold valued at £5000.
At the Police Court to-day Alexender Campbell was charged with attempting to murder a man named Smith by putting arsenic in his tea. The case was remanded,
Wellington, Thursday night. Mr G. Thomas reports flour Adelaide £18; colonial £13; oats 4s 3d in demand; bran is 2d; wheat 4s ; hams 9d; bacon 8d; maize 6s 6d; cheese 7d to 8d; pollard £7 10s ; potatoes £3 15s; butter lOd to Is.
Friday. After considerable debate the City Council has unanimously adopted Mr Clarke's drainage scheme. A few details were objected to, but the scheme as a whole was approved of.
The Speaker has received a telegram from MrLarnach, dated May 31st, tendering his resignation, and it is notified that the seat is now vacant.
It is stated that in all cases where the acceptance of tenders for the construction of railways and other public works was postponed pending advices from London as to the floating of the loan the Government have resolved to let the contracts.
Christchukch, Thursday night. Subscriptions have been collected to telegraph to the Australian cricketers in England, congratulating them on their success against the English cricketers, and suggesting that if the Australians have any desire to have their revenge on Canterbury, they can return by the San Francisco route, and call here, when a match will be arranged for them. The Governor held a levee to-day, when about sixty gentlemen were presented. This afternoon a testimonial of 220 sovereigns were presented to Lieut. Dugald MacFarland, an old Waterloo veteriau aged 88, as a birthday present.
The weather is still very wet. Grahamstown, Thursday night. The County Council to-day decided to send the Chairman to the Wellington Conference on the 2 1st of July. The Finance has recommended that the Counties Act be amended to enable ratepayers to elect two Auditors and that the accounts of the local Boards receiving Government 'aid be subsequently audited by the Government Auditor. Dunedin, Thursday night. Wheat is quoted at 4s 3d to 4a 4d; oats 3s 4d to 3s 6d; barley 5s to 5s 6d. Mr Bradshaw reports Colonial Bank shares at 53s 6d; National 18s; National Insurance 27s 6d; Union Insurance 17s ; South British 72s 6d New Zealand Insurance 87s 6d; Mosgiel Factory 675; Guthrie and Larnach's Factories 60s; New Zealand Shipping 755. Sir J. Coode's report was received by the Harbor Board to-day and referred to the Works Committee for their report, but is not to be published in the meantime.
