EDUCATION BOARD.
The Board met yesterday. Present : Mr Barnicoat, the Bishop of Nelson, Messrs Campbell, Wastney, Jackson, Malcolm, and Shephard.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed
The report of the Works and Finance Committee was considered, when it was resolved that the following scheme, re the Bridge-street schools, be communicated to the Town Committee, with a view to the Board's obtaining the Committee's opinion thereon by next mectiug: — "I. That the present master of the 2nd Division of Bridge-street School be appointed master of the three divisions of that school, at the same rate of sa'ary as the masters of Haven Road and Hampden-stre«t Schools, viz., fixed salary £160 per annum with threefifths of the head money, beginning when the number of scholars in daily attendance exceeds 55.
2. That the salary of. the first assistant be fixed at £120 per annum, with sixth-tenths of the remaining two-fifths of head money. 3. That the salary of the 2nd assistant be fixed at £100 per aunum, with four-tenths of the two-fifths of head money." Resolved— That no increase be made in the salary of the master of the Lower Wakefield Beys' School,
Resolved— That the salary of the master of the Motupipi School be increased to £120 from June 1. *
Resolved— That the salary of the teacher at Ngatiraoti be reduced to £72 per annum from October I, 1878.
Resolved— That the salary of the master at Pangatotara be increased to £120 per annum from June 1.
Resolved— That the salary of the master of Waitnea West Village School be reduced to £100 per annum if the attendance does not materially improve during the next six months.
Resolved— That no addition be made to; the salary of the present mistress at Brooklyn until she has been employed at that school for twelvemonths.
Resolved— That from June Ist the assistants at the junior division of the Westport School be paid at the following increased rate:— Miss Blaxall £72, Miss E. Blaxall £60, with proportion of head money. The consideration of the tollowing recommendation was postponed for a month iu order to allow the School Committees interested an opportunity of expressing their opinion as to the proposed changes: —
"That the school-rooms at Ranzau and Spring Grove be moved to a more central position in their respective neighborhoods, with a view to amalgamating the Hope and Ranzau, ami the Spring Grove and River Terrace Schools."
A circular was ordered to be printed for distribution among the School Committees, embodying a memorandum prepared by the Inspector on irregular and defective attendance. (See Appendix A). Resolved — That in making new appointments £120 be the fixed salary allowed when the average daily attendance for the previous six months has amounted to twenty-five; svhen the average has leen 20, £100; when it has been less that 20, £72 ; with house allowance of £12 in each case where no house is provided by the Board. Resolved — That the following grants of money be made:— •
1. Mr A. Browu £1 17s for fittings of house at Westport.
2. VVestport Committee £26 for fencing in closets, and for ventilating middle room of boys' school.
3. Mr F. Plank £60 as compensation for the loss he has sustained by making a tramway to the school building, and in clearing the wrong site.
4. Charleston School Committee £25 for school furniture, and £20 for repairiug teacher's cottage.
5. Miss Middleton £18 for six months' services as assistant at Brunnerton.
6. Mrs Gaskin £6 for additional services when she had sole control of Cobden School.
7. Spring Grove Committee £42 for improving master's house at Spring Grove. 8. Mr Bull £3 for additional painting at Karamea.
9 Upper Wakcfield Committee £10 for addition to master's house at Foxhill.
Resolved — That from June 30th a subsidy be allowed to a school at the Lyell, and to another at the Tadmor.
Resolved— That from July Isfc, 1377, the grants to aided schools be at* the rate of £3 10s per annum for each scholar in daily attendance of school age, and efficiently taught, but that no further aid be given in the shape of books or school material. Also that it be one of the conditions of thi3 grant that the inhabitants of the district in which any aided school is situated contribute to the teacher's income in the proportion of not less than one pound for every three pounds ten shillings contributed by the Board, and that the teacher's receipt for whatever private contributions are paid be forwarded to the Board at the close of each quarter. Resolved— That the Richmond Committee be authorised to purchase a site for the master's house at a cost of not more than £72.
Resolved — That the time and place for the first meeting of the newly elected School Committees be fixed as follows, and advertised at once :
Time : Thursday, June 13th at 7 p.m. Place : The principal school-room in each school district.
Resolved, in compliance with the request of the Marlborongh Education Board— That the Nelsou Inspector undertake the inspection of the Marlborougli schools also, and that his salary and expenses be paid by the two districts in the following proportions : — Nelson £375 per annum, Marlborough £125 per annum. Each district to bear the cost of its own travelling expenses at the rate of £1 per day, with coach, railway, and steamboat fares.
Resolved— That from January ], 1878, the Inspector and Secretary be paid at the rate of £500 per annum, with travelling expenses on the foregoing scale.
Notice of motion by Mr Campbell— That the sum of £25 be allowed Mr R. Ray to reimburse him for the outlay he has incurred in removing his family from Cobdeu to the Karamea.
