EXTRACTS from " The Protection of Animals Act, 1873," published by ordtr of the Nelson Acclimatization Society : — Section 15 — No game shall be poisoned on any account or on any pretence whatever; nor shall any game be trapped or taken by means of traps, nets, springe. I*,1 *, or by any other means than hunting or shotting, nor ahall any trap, net, cr snare be msde, erected, or set, eit ! er wholly or in part, for the purpose ot such trapping or taking tit any time whatever, except by persons duly authorised, pursuant to Section 23 of this Act. Section 23.— 1t shall be lawful for the Governor, by writing under his hand, to authorise any person, or the servants of any such persons, to ca'ch or toke auy such animals or birds, or the eggs of any such birds, for the purpose of distributing, changing, or turning out the same in some other country or part of the Colony: Provided that nothing herein contained shall be deemed to authorise any person or persons to commit a trespass ; and provided further that no person or persons shall be deemed to be so authorised to catch or to take, or shall catch or take any J animals or birds or the eggs of such birds, unless he or they can show a license so to. do (under the hand of the Governor), and no such license shall in any case have any force or effect for a longer, period than twelve caleudar mouths from the' date of such license. Section 18.— No person shall sell game , until he-shall have taken out a license, which shall be in the form of the third schedule to this Act * * * * and such license shall be in force for a period endiug on the seventh day after the colse of any season fixed by this Act, or under the powers herein contained; and the persoi requiring the same shall in respect of every such license pay *.* * the sum of five pounds; aud if any person shall sell any game without having duly taken out and having in force such license as aforesaid, he shall for every such act forfeit ahd pay the sum rf twenty pounds ; and it shall be lawful for the owner of every license in the form of the second schedule to this Act (shooting license) to sell game to any person holding a lioense to selt game in the form of the third schedule to this Act, without taking out {any additional license to sell game as required in this sec- v tion; and every person who shall sell, offer for sale, or expose for sale, and every holder of a license to sell game who. shall have in his possession or shall in any manner dispose of any dead hen pheasant, shall, on conviction, forfeit' and pay for every such act a sum not exceeding twenty poands, and if such person hold a license to kill or sell game, such license shall, on conviction, become ipso facto void, 1937
