INTER PROVINCIAL.
fPBKSS AGENCT.] CHRisTcntjßcn, Friday. A somewhat exciting incident occurred this afternoon. A Yeomanry trooper, who formed one of the escort for the Governor, was riding, in an apparently intoxicated state, through the square, when he collided with a horse and trap, the shaft of the latter severely wounding his horse. The police attempted to take the trooper io custody, but the latter objected. Some bystanders proceeded to help the constable, when the trooper drew his sword. A sergeant of the Yeomanry interfered and a disturbance ensued, the two Yeomanry being ultimately carried ofi to the lock-up. m. r,.. Saturday. . The lunesthis morning says :— We are in a position to state that the Government has ordered the whole of the heavy guns recommended by the Imperial Commission, and these, together with the necessary ammunition, are now on the way out. Regarding small arms, we have authority for stating that the Government has a stock of 5000 Sniders of ordinary, and 2000 of the shorter pattern, which, with another thousand of the former now ordered, will soon give ths colony a total of 8000 Snider rifles. For these there are in stock two million rounds of ball cartridge for the ordinary rifleß, and a larger proportion for the carbines. Some of this stock has only recently arrived, having been ordered by the Government shortly after taking office. In addition to the Suidere, the Government can muster 13,000 Enfield rifles, and a large quantity of suitable ammunition, making a total of 21,000 rifles at their disposal. The Government have under their consideration a plan of torpedo defence, which will probably be undertaken. The intention of the Government is, as soon as war is declared, to bring down a few Armed Constabulary men to each port as the nucleus of a force of Artillery, and to place the Naval and Artillery Volunteers on a satisfactory footing, and to consider the question of enrolling the Militia, probably with the advice of. Parliament. It will, be interesting tojearn that the Commission of Officers that reported on the defence of New, Zealand had the advantage of the latest charts of the colony, and obtained full information from officers, some of them scientific men, of both services, who know the localities. They also had before them the report of Colonel Moule, R.E., j made after inspecting the harbors, and the j confidential report made by Sir W. Jervois ! some few years ago, at the request of Sir W. j Jervois, which has been practically adopted | by the Committee. Wellington, Friday. In the Appeal Court, the Crown case reserved of Regina v. Barnsley; who was convicted of forging a money order for £10, purporting to be through the Telegraph office, was heard. Sentence' was postponed, pending the decision of the Court of Appeal on a point raised in the Supreme Court, namely, that prisoner could not be convicted, because I the forgery was not that of an order for payment of money, but only of a telegram of an order. The Court of Appeal held that the document not be regarded as original, and the conviction must therefore j be quashed. Donedin, Thursday.
