Wellington, Monday. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company reports, uuder date London, May 22 :■— The wool sales are progressing firmly. Lambs' wool firm ; up to date 53,000 bales of wool were sold, Tallow dull, beef, 37s 6d; mutton, 38s 6d. Wheat, market quiet; New Zealand wheat, 495; Leather, flat; 3f 0 Australian sides were sold since last report; best sides, rough, 9id. The census returns of the total population of the whole colony have been completed. The results are as follows :— Males, 230,898; females, 183,273; total, 414,171. In this are included 4302 Chinese, but no Maoris. The population of the Chatham Islands is 100 males and 72 females. Bluff, Tuesday. The s s. Gazelle attempted to pick up the Ann Gambles' anchors yesterday. On hauling in the cable it was found that the starboard anchor was broken on the shackle. This accounts for the ship going ou shore. Hokitika, Tuesday. William Smith's tender of £27,590 has been accepted by the Harbor Board for the construction of harbor works. Timaru, Tuesday. As showing the high price of land in South Canterbury, Mr Jonas Hart disposed of Messrs Quinn Bros.' farm at Waikihi, consisting of 7740 acres for £16,500, being over £22 per acre. A section of land consisting of 32 perches in Timaru, opposite the Police Station, was sold for £800? Christchurch, Monday. Colonel Brett's station at Mount Torlesse has heen sold for £11,000. It comprised 21,000 acres leasehold, 530 acres of preemptive right, 800 acres freehold, 10,000 sheep, and house and station buildingsTuesday. The Middle Park Company's colt Sfc George, own brother to Chester, is among the Canterbury entries for the Dunedin Champion Stakes. Dunedin, Monday. The erectiou of a new Kornan Catholic cathedral is about to be commenced here. It will cost about £2C,000, aud hold 2000 people when finished. Ifc is proposed to erect only the nave and aisle at present, and the cost of this will be £6000, and it will accommodate 800 persons. Auckland, Monday. A fire on the premises of Halliday, cabinetmaker, this morning, broke out under -the window, near the door. Considerable damage was done to the workshop. The loss is estimated afc £1500; the building is insured in the New Zealand office for £600, and the furniture in the South British for £1300. Fears are entertained for the safely of the barque Shera, from Melbourne to Kaipara. She was six miles outside on the 17th, and has not been seen since. Serious floods have occurred afc Coromandel, destroying several bridges, miners' races, and tramways. The houses suffered severely, and there were many landslips. Invebcargill, Tuesday. The Court of Inquiry into the wreck of fche Ann Gambles decided to suspend Captain Morgan's certificate for six months. Tbe mate's certificate was returned.
