CORRESPONDENCE.

NELSON & WEST COAST RAILWAY. To the Editor of the 'Evening Mau..' Sir -By the leading article in your last Wednesday's issue, I see that the Miuister has afc last trodden on the tender corns of the Nelson people, which has aroused them from their apathy to look to their rights as part aud parcel of New Zealand. Yefc lam not sorry that that piece of work has been stopped, as a worse piece of engineering skill never came under my notice. The so-called Port Railway, as now laid out, would be but very little use, and certainly no ornament. Ifc. appears to me thafc the engineers (?) who laid out that work had orders something to this effect : " You go and lay out the Port Railway in the Sleepy Holiow, no matter Where, but see that you put plenty of pegs in." I hope Nelson people will not let themselves be soft-soaped again, but insist upon not only the Port Railway, but the Nelson and West Coast Railway continued year by year, and the way I indicated in my last letter. Do nofc be persuaded by Tophouse and Tarndale ruu-holders thafc it is to your interest to make a railway to their sheepruns. No ; choose a route where you get the greatest commerce to the town and tbe port. Bear in mind a certain passage in the Gospels — "Ask and it shall be given you. Knock and it shall be opened to you." Now, my advice is — if you can't get it* by asking, knock and keep knocking until you do get it. I could write enough to fill every nook and corner of your paper without exhausting the subject, but I will not trespass any more on your space, as I hope the matter will be pretty well ventilated in this evening's meeting. Locohotive. Nelson, May 27, 1878.
