The New Zealand Times calls attention to the fact that of late certain Publia Works advertisements have been withheld from it though given to other local papers, and it publishes about half a column of Govern- ' ment advertisements this morning under the heading " gratis advertisements." Port Chalmers, Wednesday. I Arrived— Brigantine Camellia, from New York, after a passage of 1 1 9 days. She met with a series of terrific gales from S.W. to j N. W. right across the Southern Ocean. She brings 450 tons of cargo, two-thirds for Dunedin, aud the rest for the Bluff. • Auckland, Tuesday. Mr Harris has retired in favor of Mr Hobbs for the candidature of Franklyn. Mr Hobbs i is a strong Ministerial supporter. ' j Mr Vesey Stewart has written to the i Waste Lands Board stating that he had chartered the Lady Jocelyn to brin? his special settlers. He further complains of the Agent-General. The correspondence is referred to the Minister of Lands. Sir G. Grey has raturned in better health. Notwithstanding his fatigue, he remains at Kawai till Sir John Coode arrives in the Hinemoa. Blotf, Wednesday. The Alhambra arrived at 8 a.m. She left Melbourne at 3.30 p.m. on the 9th, passed the Solanders at 5 p.m. on the Uth, and hove to till 9 p.m., experienced heavy westerly gales during the passage with very high sea which was continually sweeping the decks, and washed away one boat. She brings 15 saloon and 31 steerage passengers for all ports. She sails at 4 p.m. for Dunedin. ■ DfIN«DiN, Wednesday. At a public meeting held last night it was resolved to establish in Dunedin an institution having for its object the mental and moral advancement of these who are disinclined to take part in any sectarian association. Chbistchuhch, Wednesday. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, James Woodford, an elderly man, and third master of the East Christchurch school, was committed for trial for a criminal assault on a girl ten years of age, who attended the school. The evidence appears very conclusive. At the termination of the case, the mother of the girl in a very excited state made her way into the Court, and threatened to kill Woodford. Inveecargili,, Wednesday. At a meetiug held last night to consider the question of harbor defences it was resolved that the Government be requested to provide a suitable number of guns for the defence of the Bluff Harbor and Waihopai estuary.
