Wellington, Thursday night. Colonel Whitmore, the Hon. Mr Fisher, Colonel Reader, and Captain Johnston inspected the harbor this afternoon, with the view of deciding where to place the batteries for defensive purposes. The general impression was that instead of placing all of the artillery at the Heads, it would be better to have one battery of three gunß on Ward's Island, which commands the entrance to the Heads, as well as the anchorage, and another either at Point Jerningham or at Pipitea Point.
Friday. George Thomas reports produce prices a3 follows :- Flour, Adelaide, £18; Colonial, £13 to £13 10s ; oats, 4s 3d; bran, is; wheat, 3s 10d; hams, 9d; bacon, 8d; chee3e, 7Jd; maize, 6s 6d; potatoes, £3 15b: pollard, 7sbutter, Is to is 3d.
Auckland, Thursday night! The contest for Franklin will probably lie between Mr Hobbs and Mr Harris, of Waiuku, both being Grey supporters. Sir Arthur Gordon, the Governor of Fiji, met with very friendly receptions from the natives of Tonga. The chiefs declared their determination to maintain their own Government, which Sir Arthur highly praised. The New Zealand Insurance Company Ice £1200, and the North British £3000, by the foundering off Cape Horn of the ship Harzelline, from New York to San Francisco. The risks were taken by the San Francisco agents of those Companies.
Friday. Mr Bucklana reports fat cattle 26s to 30s per 100 lbs; sheep, full-mouthed medium, dull of sale; for well fatted wethers, a good euquiry at 2d to 3d per lb. Oamaku, Thursday night. At the conclusion of the speeches by Messrs Shrimski and Hislop, in addressing their constituents, a vote of confidence in both was unanimously passed.
Dcnedin, Thursday night. Mr Donald Reid is appointed Chairman of the new Education Board. He addresses his constituents next Thursday.
Chhistchcrch, Friday. In connection with the agitation here for increasing the strength of the Volunteers, a telegram was sent to the Government to-day with a view to ascertaining what encouragement would be offered. The reply received states that uatil war i 3 actually declared the Government do not feel justified in taking any steps regardingthe volunteer or militia question.
