A fire occurred at two o'clock this morning in Phillip's store which was totally consumed. The want of an engine was much felt, and if there had been one much property might have been saved. The store and valuable stock were lost, besides an adjoining building used as a dwelling house. The total loss is estimated at £3000. The buildings were insured in the Victoria for £500, half of which is reinsured, and the stock for £800 in the Union, of which £550 is reinsured in the New Zealand Company. Chhistchurch, Thursday. Sergt. Hughes while arresting Samuel Badbam for wife-desertion last night was stabbed by Badham in the lower part of the loin, but fortunately the wound is not dangerous.
