[PBKSS AGENOT.] Ddnedin, Saturday. Strong efforts are being made hy the Taieri Bettlers to induce Mr Donald Reid still to represent them in Parliament. Dr. Somerville and Son arrived here last night. Drs. Copeland and Stuart applied to the School Committee last night for the use of the class rooms in the Dunedin public schools on Saturdays for the purpose of holding classes for instructing children in Christian religion. The desirability of granting the application was questioned by fcomia ot the members of the Committee, j-ind the decision was postponed. The Morning Herald appears of full to-day. Mst night as Mr Clelland, agent for the Bank of New Zealand at Featherston, and his assistant, Mr Luxford, were driving towards FeatherstoD, the horse bolted, and the buggy capsized. Mr Clelland is dangerously injured, and is not expected to recover. Mr Luxford escaped uninjured. Dr Hector bas analysed the contents of the stomachs of the racehorses that recently died jat Castle Point, and states that the stomachs contained a quantity of arsenic. Dr. Hector, by request, having tested the kerosene, by which the late fatal accident was caused, reports:—" The flashing point of this oil is 105 degrees Fahrenheit, but after it has been warmed to 1 10 degrees it flashes at 100 degrees or even less. The oil is therefore petroleum, and dangerous within the meaning of 'Dangerous Goods Act, 1869/ and under the isth Clause should not be sold except in vessels marked ' Dangerous — No light to be brought near.' OAsrARu, Saturday night. Sailed— Richard and Mary for Nelson. Auckland, Saturday night. The Governor presided at the inaugural meeting of the Auckland Young Men Christian Association. In his opening address he said he desired when the opportunity offered to evince his appreciation of Associations such as the one in connection with which the present meeting was held. He said that the national character and progress greatly depended upon the education, character, and social condition of its inhabitants. He referred to the spread of knowledge and increased facilities for the education of the young. Unfortunately sectarian differences prevented the association of secular and religious education in the public schools of the country supplied by the State, which found it impossible to conduct religious education in the public schools so as to meet the views of the various religious bodies, and therefore it was most essential in every Christian country that religious education should be available for the young. He advocated the formation of associations such as the Auckland Young Men's Christian Association, and considered tbey were the best means of preventing the spread of drunkenness.
