A ROMANTIC MARRIAGE.
A New York correspondent supplies the following .' — London society, if we are correctly informed on this side of the water, has heard and seen a great deal at various times of the rich nnd dashing; American widow, Mrs Hicks, whose name bos been mentioned in connection with certain marriageable members of the British aristocracy, and whose ctiU.rluiuiLe.wß in the British capital were recently described at stupendous length in the society journals. London will perhaps be interested, therefore, in the extrordinary incident which bos made her (for the first time in her life) the talk of New Yoik. She returned from Europe only a few weeks ago, and on the strength of her essumed snecesses i>i London, she would perhaps have tukon a prominent position in society at home, but for this unexpected event. For on tho last day of the year she eloped with a wealthy widower of eighty-three, and the first intimation of the nuptials con-
veyed even to (lie six sons and daughters of (he bappy man was a notice in the morning papers that Th6ma3 Lord had beeu duly marrisd by his Emineuc3 Cardinal McCloskey to Annette Wilholraina Wilkens Hicke. Excepting for the trifling circumstances that Mr Lord is more than an octogenarian, with considerably than one foot in the grave, the wedding was deliciously romm'ic. It was performed quietly — I may say secretly — at the Cardinal's house ; the bride and groom iai mediately tiissappearerf, ond aoWly knows whufc has become of them. Mr Lord !i>s a fortune of about a tmllioa and d' half of dollars, moally in city renl rratata. He' wasvery infirm ; he has hni orfs stroke o(i paralj sis, nnJ it would appear from recent stAtein'-nts that he has 'd3an for b Ion" ti n« incapable of managing' &i&'- \ affairs. The age of Mrs Hicks is saicJ 1 f to be foriy-thref. Immediately on | the discovery of the marriage the son 3 of Mr Lord applied to the Courts for a com mission de lunatico inquirendo, and supported it by some very curioua nffiJavidts, aud the writ was promptly grauted. Mr Lor ', in the meantime is enjoined from parting with aDy of bia property. It is ascertained, bowever, ho bus recently couverted various Becurities into cash, nn \ drawn considerahla sums of inonay from the bank, of which no trace cuu be found.
