EDUCATION BOARD.
The monihly meeting of the board was held yesterday. Present : Messrs Barnicoat, Wastney, Campbell, Malcolm, Jackson, Bout, Dencfcer, Bishop of Nelson, Shephard. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed..
The following recommendation from the Town Committee having been laid before the Board,—" That in consequence of the unsatisfactory state of the First and Third Divisions of Bridge-street School, this Committee recommends that the School be remodelled, with the view of raising the standard of the First Division, so that a good commercial education might be imparted there, and that the masters of the above Divisions receive three months' notice, other masters being advertised for,"— it was resolved that the Board coucurs in the recommendations of the Nelson School Committee as to the removal of masters, and that the Secretary be directed to give them notice accordingly.
The following recommendations of the Works and Finance Committee were adopted: 1. That in consideration of the largely increased attendance at their schools during the March quarter, owing to the abolition of school fees, the subBidiea to Messrs A. Brown, It. Delany, and E. Edridge be calculated on the returns for the March quarter instead of the December quarter of 1877 as hitherto. 2. That the further consideration of an application for a teacher at Pakawau be deferred until the Inspector has had an opportunity of making further enquiry in the neighborhood as to the number of children of school age likely to attend if Pakawau school were re-opened. 3. That the consideration of a similar application from the Tadmor be' also deferred with the same object. 4. That, on the recommendation of the Inspector, the usual subsidy be allowed to Mrs Rogers' school, at.' Capleston, to date from January 1 1878. 6. That the premium of ten guineas be awarded to Mr Rochfort's design, for a school in Toi-Toi Valley, as being the better of the two plans < that complied with the condition© laid down by the Board. There wore four competitors. Resolved, That the design for the boya' school at Westporfc, drawn by Mr John Scott be adopted for the Toi-Toi Valley school, with some modification.
Reoslved, That the bye-laws, as revised, be printed and circulated among the members of the Board.
Resolved, That a special meeting of the Board be held on Thursday, May 16th, at 10 a.m., to consider the Board's report for 1877, the estimate of income and expenditure for 1878, teachers' salaries and travelling expenses of Inspector, and bye-laws as revised. Resolved, That the site for a master's house at Richmond, approved of by the subcommittee, being an acre of land formerly occupied by Mr Simons, and offered Dy Mr Muntz for £100, be recommended to the Richmond Committee.
Resolved, That the boundaries of the new school districts at Keefton, Charleston, and Addison's Flat, as proposed by the Secretary bo adopted and published. Resolved, That the arrangements made by the Inspector for providing temporary school accommodation at Reef ton, Charleston, and Addison's Plat be sanctioned. Resolved, That the Secretary give the assistant teacher at Richmond boys' school notice that iwr serrices will be dispensed
with at the etid of six months, unless, within that period, it is found that a material improvement has taken place in the classes under her care.
The tenders for building a master's honse at the Karamea having been sent in, the lowest, that of Mr Walter Bull, for £325 (with iron instead of brick -chimneys), be accepted. A letter was read from the Minister of Public Works declining to alter the existi g scale of fares for scholars over 16 years old. A letter was read from the Pangatotara GJotdmitteej applying for a grant of money to repair the schoolroom. The Secretary was instructed to apply to the Committee for a detailed statement of the work re* d_uired, and its probable cost.
The consideration of an application from the same Committee for an increase of salary for the master on account of the increased numbers now attending the school, was deferred until next meeting.
Resolved, That £50 be allowed to tlie East Takaka Committee to enable them to enlarge the school, an applieatiou for £10 to fence the school ground being refused.
Resolved, That £25 .be set apart for a brick culvert across St; Vincent-street, in front of the site of the Toi-Toi Valley School, the Works Committee to arrange with the City Council as to the carrying out of the work.
Resolved, That the recommendation of the Upper Wakefield Committee "That £3 additional be granted to Miss Hoult for extra services in teaching," be acceded to.
Notice of motion by Mr Shcphard — " That £10 be allowed for an addition to the Foxhill master's house. .
Bank balance on May Ist £1615 11s Id, to meet cheques for £1215 7s 4d.
