(-*EK Arawata.*. • , , MteLfeouiiNE, April 25. The week has been principally devoted to holiday toaki'n^ and very little of consequence has transpired Dolitically, socially, or commercially. The Governor visited Sandhurst on Monday at the opening of the Easter fair. He was banquetted in the evening, and as usual made a speech in which he congratulated hiniBelf on the impartiality he had displayed during the crista) and quoted largely from a speech by Lord Dufferin with a view to showing that he had followed a similar line of action. Master Hetcules Robinso^ son of the Governor of New South Wales*, who is a pupil at the Church of England Grammer School*, is dangerously ill from scarlet fever. Lady Robinson is nursing him. The Pacific Company's steamer Garonne arrived after a 57 days passage. She brought over 400 passengers. The Cable Conference has been postponed to the first week in May. A large humber of reinstatements have been made in the education departments, and twelve of the police magistrates have beeu reappointed, leaving still a large number unemployed; six of them, being over sixty years of age, are superannuated. The Captain and the chief officers of the brig Alexandra have been committed for trial for endeavouring to scuttle the vessel. Parliament will not meet till the middle of June. Business is dull owing to the holidays. Sydney, April 25. The racing at the Autumn Meeting has been very good. The Cup and St. Leger time were both very fast. Fifteen horses started for the Cup. The Exhibition,;so far, ha« not been successful either in exhibits or attendance, but the preparations are not yet completed.
