CITY COUNCIL.

The Council held its ordinaay fortnightly meeting last night, the Mayor in the chair. The following recommendations of the Public. Works Committee were adopted •. — That the use of the paddock next the gasworks be granted to Mr F Atkinson ; that a copy of Mr Gray's letter re the accident to his grandchild be forwarded to the Superintendent of Public Works; that the attention of the proper authorities be called to the condition of the Cemetery reserve ; that the horse not in use be sold • that tho surplus earth in St. Vincent-street be used for making up the road. The Surveyor was instructed to repair the culvert at the back of Mr Gilbertson's house at the Port. His Worship stated that a writ had been served on the Council by Mr Thiel, of Westportj for £200 damages for injuries sustained Some weeks ago. It was resolved to refer the matter to the Council's solicitor, with instructions that he should obtain Mr Conolly's opinion. On the motion of Crl Everett it was resolved to push on at once the work of widening the Port road below the Commercial Wharf. . The question of asphalting the footpaths was brought forward for by Cr. Little, and referred to the Public Works Committee. In reply to Cr.
