Wellington, Thursday. A deputation of settler's froni Manawatu waited upon tire Premiek- &nd Mr Ballance to-day, and urged the necessity of a railway litre between the Hutt and Manawatu. The Government promised the line should be surveyed without delay. Sir John Coode is expected here on Satut* day. 4 A circular has been Issued to the various Government depar'tinents, to inform the Civil Sei'VAnw that they they must no longer rely \ipon the 40th section of the Civil Service Act 1876, as providinga grant to their widows and families, but officers of the Government are expected to make provision for those dependent upon them by means of the Government Insurance system. It has been determined by the Ministry that in the cases of cadets in the Government Service, their time will hot cbunt as lefigth of service until they nave been in receipt of a salary dE Jetf)b per annum. UfiRiSTCHURCH, Wednesday/. There were three auction sales dJ! rating stock to-day. There was ft large attendance but very few sales wtere effected; these were — Miriellejto Mr J. A. O'Brien for 330 guineas; Atlanta to Mr Rolleston for 130 guineas; Pre to Mr Gilligan for 37 guineas* Luna to Mr D. O'Brien for 240 guineas; Sir Tatton to Mr D. O'Brien for 100 guineas; filly by Traducer, dam Opera, to Mr j' Brabazon for 150 guineas; filly by Castaway, dam Moss Rose to Mr Todhunter, for $0 guineas; filly by Albany, dam Red Rose, to Mr H. Redwood for 35 guineas, and colt by Castaway, dam Patrician, 30 guineas ; Obeiroh to Mr Kitching for 260 guineas ; Mountaineer to Mr Kitching for 180 guineas; The Chief to Mr Mar key for 100 guineas ; Fishhook was passed in at 800 guineas, and Mousetrap at 275 guineas. Thursday! The settling on the races took place last night, and passed off satisfactorily. The Jockey Club paid over the following amounts: Mr Redwood, £695; Mr Webb, £247; Mr Mallock, £236; Mr Ray, £137; Mr Markey, £123; Mr O'Brien, £85; Mr Lunn, £28. There are 28 entries for the Champagne Stakes 1879, vifc., Webb 4, Garforth 1, Goodman 1, Paterson 2, Todhunter 1, Mallock 4, Brabazon 1, Lance 3, Redwood 6, O'Brien 1, Delamain 1, Seabright 1. Mr Lance' 3 entries include the coit St. George^ purchased in Sydney for the Middle Park Stud Company. At the Magistrates' Court Peter Pasche, for haviDg a gambling table on the race course, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor. The evidence | showed that there was a hollow in the centre of the table containing machinery, which enabled the prisoner to stop the revolving needle wherever he wished, and thus to swindle the public with impunity. James Ryan, for playing the three card trick on the racecourse, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labor. A daughter of the Hon. W, Robinson was J married yesterday to the eldest son of Sir Francis Dillon Bell. A man was buried by a fall of earth in a well on the Shand's Track yesterday > The relief party, after three hours' digging, could hear the man speak, but had not, when last heard from, succeeded in accomplishing hi 3 rescue. , Auckland. Thursday. At forty minutes past two this morning a fire occurred at Newton in a two storey block in which is Hanson's Queen Hotel. Near this block was an old dilapidated shed from which a policeman drove a loafer last night. The fire originated in the shed and spread to the block. The Newton Fire Brigade had no hydrant, and the City Brigade which followed were a long time in obtaining a supply of water. During the delay the fire spread to Mona View Cottage which was destroyed, but the greater part of the furniture was saved. The Hotel was also destroyed. Mona View was insured in the New Zealand Company for £800. The hotel stock and furniture were insured in the Phoenix for £200, and the building for £250. Tuesday night. St. Leger Stakes of 100 soys., added to a sweepstake of 10 soys each. Mr Walters' Venus Transit 1, Mr Buckland'a Queen Mab 2 Betting 3tol on Venus Transit. French, the jockey, was fined 2 soys. for being late. Flying Stakes: Isaac Walton 1, May Moon 2, Omega 3. Betting 3 to 1 against Isaac Walton, and 5 to one against anything else The following were scratched :-Nimrod, Hippocampus, Pungawerewere, Xantippe. Isaac carried a penalty of slbs for winning the Selling Race last January, Steeplechase :— Don Juan, Mclvor 1 ; Sportsman, Wilson 2 ; Perfume, Wheeler 3. There also ran, Loafer, Whitefoot and the Don. Don Juan carried 71bs, and Sportsman 171bs extra. Betting 2 to 1 against Don Juan, Perfume, and Butcher Boy ; 3 to 1 against Loafer and 5 to I against Sportsman. Whitefoot led off followed by Butcher Boy and Don Juan with Perfume, who got badly off last. At the double hurdle opposite the stand, McGee's mare struck her heels violently splintering the bars. The small stone wall was successfully negotiated, but a little further on Perfume made a kind of half back which threw her much behind. As they were mounting the hill Don Juan kicked the wall, and Loafer fell behind seemingly outpaced. In mounting the hill the second time Butcher Boy cannoned against Sportsman and threw his rider, and from this point the race was a gift to Don Juan, who came in a gallant winner by a length from Sportsman who made an excellent race of it, Perfume a bad third. A telegram from Cambridge repeats the statement that the surveyors saw a comet during the day about forty degrees from the sun. The Northern Clnb gave the Governor and naval officers a ball. Gisbohne, Thursday. There was a very smart shock of earthquake here at I*3o this morning. Lawubnce, Thursday. The census returns for the borough of Lawrence and the electoral district of Tuapeka show the population of the borough to be 454 males and 401 females, and of the electoral district 3276 males 2111 females. The hospital committee are inviting applications for a surgeon for the Tuapeka hospital. The sa?ary is £200 per annum with a free house and the right of private practice.
