[PRKBB AGENCY.] . ! Wellington, Wednesday. Ihe evening papers to-day published the \ names of nearly all the leading men here as interested in the new Colonial Insurance Company. . Thursday. 1 A man named William Somers, a baker employed afc Mendleson'a, Pleasant Point, T?as burnt to death last night. He set a ' batch of bread at 8 o'clock, and went to bed at 9. The bakery was detached from the building, which was found on fire and burnt to the giound, and on examination the remains of Somers were found. There is no clue to the cause of the fire. The remains ■were taken to the Point Hotel, where an inquest will be held. In the Supreme Court this morning, an important decision was given in a Westport mining case, Seatou, a shareholder in the Halcyon Quartz Mining Company, appealed against a judgment of the Court. After argument the appeal was upheld, and the Court below was ordered to enter up judge--menfcfor the defendent instead of for the plaintiff. The Supreme Court upheld the appeal, on the ground that after the lapse of 21 days calls could not be sued for. Timaku, Wednesday. A painful accident has happened to Mr Jones, the Timaru district station master.

A miner named Micnael Collins, at Cororaandel, has received a letter from his London solicitors announcing that he is heir to a fortune of three hundred thousand pounds In the case of Arthur v. Waikatd Steam Navigation Company, 'claim for £500 damages for injuries received from falling down the hold through alleged negligence of defendants, nine of the jury were in favor of awarding no damages. The judge held this to be a verdict for defendants, which was entered accordingly. A young man, named S. Aitken, nephew of Aitken, land h&ehfe, fell down in an apoPletic fit this morning and died immSaSJ. He had been employed as clerk in Hesketh and lticnraoy,u'g. .Montague M'Murdo, son of Capt. M'Murdo, ot the Mutual Life Association, was thrown trom a horse and sustained concussion of the brain. It is feared that the injuries are fatal. The City Council to-day referred the question of the employment of Mr Clark, C.E , to the Public Works Committee. DuNEDiN, Wednesday. A writ for £2000 damages was yesterday served on the proprietors of the Daily Times at the instance of Mr C. E. Haughtou for alleged libel. The matters complained of it is stated were contained in a leading article published in the Timrs of March 15th, and in a letter signed "Morality," which appeared m last Tuesday's issue of the same journal. Mr M'Laren, the self constituted leader of the working men's demonstration, was charged yesterday with riotous behaviour and drunkenness. He was released on bail on the promise that he would clear out to Victoria on Sunday next. Mr. J. B. Bradshaw reports Bank of New Zealand shares at £24 ss ; Colonial Bank, £2 11s 6d; National Bank, £3 15s; Union Insurance, 15s ; Standard Insurance, £1 3s ; National Insurance, £1 10s ; New Zealand Shipping Company, £3 15; Guthrie and Larnach's £2 ?s 6d. Christchcrch, Thursday. The entries for the Dog Show number 390, and include dogs from Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, and Nelson. The Marble Company having found extensive reefs of splendid marble in their quarry, have, issued a prospectus for an increase of the capital to £10,000. Longlands is now a strong favorite at 3 to 1 for the Autumn Handicap; Bide-a-wee stands at 5 to 1, Templeton at 5 to 1, Ariel at 6to 1, and Marifana at Bto 1. The betting for the Champagne Stakes is 6 to 4ragst Natator, 2 to 1 agst Jock, 3 to 1 agst Merlin, 4 to I agst Nemo, and 6 to 1 agst Atlantic and Eama.
