A letter was read from Mr R. Gray, stating that a grandson of his had falleji through or 'over the willow sticks; miscalled protective Works, at the Normanby Bridge, and that in tfie name of the child's father, W. Spencer, he should hold the Council responsible for the consequences. The report of the Public Works Committee recommended :—T hat s any permanent worksin Rupell-street be deferred until it was ascertained whether the prisonlabor would be available, in the meantime temporary repairs to be effected; that the probable income would not justify the. extension of the waterworks on the Waimea Road ; that such temporary repairs as from time to time may appear necessary be carried out on Collingwood Bridge; that Cr Hariey's liberal offer to lend a horse for three months be accepted; that the City Surveyor provide some, place where specifications might be .open to public inspection; All the recommendations were agreed to. 3Trom the City Surveyor's report, it appeardd that 43 .ton's 4 cwt of. coal had been carbonised during the month of March', the yield of gas being 468,680 feat, of which 90,080 feet were lost by ; condensation, leakage, &c. . i The following tenders for culvert brick* were opened:— J. Cockram, £3 10s, J.Patch- , ing £4 10s per thousand. The former was accepted:. ..• As the contract with- the Colonial Bank expires in May, it was resolved ou the motion of Cr levien that the account remain at the same institution. Cr Ilarley objected on the ground that a3 the account had been tendered for before the same course should be pursued now. It was resolved, after discussing the Colonial Secretary's circular regarding hospitals and charitable institutions, that the Council declines to accept any responsibility iv reference to them. Cr Johns was appointed a member of the Finance Committee, and the Council then adjourned.
