M'Lean Brothers report wheat arriving more freely;' parcels of the best description have changed hands at 4s 6d; transactions however are not large. Millers are operating very cautiously. Important sales have been effected in the Oamaru district, and up to 43 4d was quoted. Prime new grain has been delivered at the mills at 4s 7d; inferior ordinary, and old, 3s 6d to 4s 4d; barley, good malting freely saleable at ss, with very little offering; feed and milling, 3s 3d to 3s 6d; oats early in the week were in best demand, arid stocks very light. Supplies are now arriving more plentifully, and prices are quoted, for feed 3s 4d, milling 3s 6d. Wellington, Thursday night. Mr Thomas reports produce prices as fol- ■ lows :— Elour, £13 to £13 10s; Adelaide, £18; oats, 4s 4d to 4s 6d; bran, Is 2d; wheat, 4s; hams, 9d; bacon, 7d; cheese, 7Jd; maize, 53 9d; pollard, £7; potatoes, £5; butter, lid. Friday. Nearly all the Railway Audit Department will be shortly notified that their services will be no longer required. Already six of these officials have received their notice of dismissal, and several others will be similarly dealt with shortly. The Wakatipu has been chartered to convey Cooper and Bailey's circus to Auckland. A large fire broke out in Monaghau's boot and shoe establishment shortly after twelve this morning. The alarm was given almost instantly, but before anything could be done the building was destroyed. Gooday's office adjoining was also destroyed. Monaghan is a heavy sufferer, having the place fully stocked and only partly insured. He estimates his loss at £250 above the insurance. Gooday's losses are also heavy, he not having a penny of insurance on the property. Napier, Thursday night. There is a good deal of activity ,iv land transactions here. Many stations in the Wanstead block lately sold at auction here have been changing hands at advanced prices, in some instances double the original price, and in others still more than that. Some of the settlers are already on their land in . blocks, and are beginning to make improvements.- . : Auckland, Friday. < The census returns for the city and suburbs give 14,936 males, and 14,226 females, total 29,162, showing ah increase since the census in 1874 of 4052. In addressing the electors at Hamilton, Sir G. Grey said it was the intention of the Government to introduce next, session a bill to tax land according to the value, for which purpose the laud will be divided into three classes, first, second, and third. Oamabu, Friday. Sir John Coode has inspected the harbor works, and recommended the collation of certain information necessary to enable him to give his report. He also desired a complete set of soundings of the bay. He appeared pleased with the breakwater works. Invebcargill, Friday. The census returns are just completed. The gross total of the population of the five electoral districts of Clutha (portion only), Riverton, Mataura, and Invercargill is 20,167, and the number of dwellings 4390. ir " ■ ■ ==5
