[press agency.] CHRiSTCHtrRcn, Wednesday. The Rifle Association will hold their annual prize firing on Easter Monday and Tuesday. Cooper & Bailey's menagerie and circus finished a most successful season last night, and will sail for Wellington this afternoon. The following animals have died since commencing the Australian tour: — 1 giraffe, 1 panther, 1 lion, 3 lion cubs, 1 tiger, a pair of wart hogs, I laughing hyena, 1 hippopotamus, 1 barking sea lion, 10 apes and monkeys, 4 kangaroos, 1 zebra, 1 seal, and 2 horses. Another man named Arthur Fredrick Wilson, has been arrested on suspicion connectedwith the recent garrotting case. Sir Cracroft Wilson addressed the electors of the Cheviot District yesterday, expressing views antagonistic to the present Government. At the conclusion of his address a vote of confidence was unanimously carried, twelve persous being present. Poet Chalmers, Wednesday. At the nomination of a Member of the House of Representatives Messrs. Dench and Green were duly proposed. The show of hands was in favor of Mr Dench, and Mr Green demanded a poll, which takes place on Friday. The noted M'Laren proposed himself, but not being on the Electoral roll, he was ordered off the hustings. Auckland, Wednesday. The City of New York left San Francisco with the outward mails on the 19th March, arrived at Honolulu. on tha 26th, and sailed the same day for Auckland arriving here at 9 p.m. yesterday, 20 days 16 hours from San Francisco. The snow blockade on the overland line from New York to San Francisco detained all the the trains 4 days but cleared just in time for the mail to pass without detention. Thursday. The Taranaki sailed for the South yesterday. Passengers for Nelson— Messrs Willscowski, Kenny, Disher, Murray, Pearce, Raine, Ereney, Beaver, Denshire, and Miss Cross. Wellington, Thursday. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here this morning about 8 30. Blenheim, Thursday. A sharp short shock of earthquake was felt at 8-55 this morning. Direction about West toEa3t. Wanganoi, Thursday. Mr Lowe, of Wellington, has purchased Mr Thompson's property of 1700 acres at Nukumara for £12 per acre.
