[PRKBS AGENCY.] Wellington, Friday. In the Supreme Court to-day, Mr Barton moved fora rule nisi calling upou T K M'Donald, R. Kerr, C. M'Kirdy, and J. li. Bethune to show cause why an attachment should not be issued against them for contempt of Court in selling the shares of the plaintiff, E. T. Gillon, in the Evening Argus Newspaper Company, the matter being then in the hands of the Court. In support of the application he read an affidavit by G. E. L'Estrange Barton, showing that he had handed to the auctioneer, Bethune, a protest against the sale on behalf of Gillon. The motion was ultimately adjourned until Tuesday. Christohurch, Friday. The receipts of the Canterbury Board of Education for 1877 were £75,000; expenditure, £58,963. The woolshed on the New Zealand and Australian Company's run in the Rakaia district was destroyed by fire yesterday. It contained grass seed worth £3000, and graiu worth £2000. The total damage is £7500, partially insured. At the meeting of the Philosophical Institute, Dr Von Haast said a gigantic kitchen midden twenty miles long and three or four hundred yards wide, exists in the colony, and some day he iutends to explore it with a view to < btaining information as to the antiquity of man in New Zealand. The grain market is very inactive, buyers showing no disposition to meet farmers' demands. Wheat, 4s 3d; oats, 3s 3d to 3s 6d; barley, 4s to 4s 6d, flour, £12; bran, £4 10s; sharps, £5 10s. Statistics show a large acreage of potatoes, and low rates are expected to rule. Auckland, Friday. There has been a discovery of a bed of clay in the North, supposed to be the meerschaum. The Lastitia, from New Caledonia, reports Pacific ship from New Zealand had put in in consequence of her cargo of timber shifting in a gale. Fire huudred French Communists arrived per Higginson to work in the copper mines by contract of twenty years, at ten cents per head per day. Noumea has suffered unprecedented heat, and sunstrokes have been numerous. There is great distress through the failure of banks. Six New Hebrides workmen attempted to escape, when one was killed and another wounded. Hokitik a, Saturday. In .Ryan's trial for murder, the jury, after being locked up all night, could not agree to verdict. They were equally divided on the issues, and the jury were discharged.' The Court adjonrned till the 20th of April. Carterton, Saturday. A large saw mill at Taratahi owned by Stewart Bros, was destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. It is supposed to have caught fire accidentally. The loss ii estimated at £3000.
