(Per Albiox.) . , _ Melhodene. A heavy flood in the suburbs has caused considerable damage to proserty. It rained heavny from Thursday to Saturday, during which time four inches of rain fell. The Yarra rose so rapidly that in a few hours it had overflowed its hanks, and all the low lying lands adjacent were speedily submerged Every building, mostly stores, on the south bank of the 1 arra was completely surrounded and communication could be carried ou onlv by boats, and then with difficulty owing to the rapid curreDt. Traffic ou the south side of Prince's Bridge was suspended for fourteen hours in consequence of the water run ning over the St. Kilda road. The whole stretch of land as far as the eye could reach was one expanse of water. One life was lost, a Chinaman being drowned in his hut on the Upper Yarra. The flood was not within four feet of the great flood of 1868, but the v/ater rose much more rapidly. A number of people had not time to save their goods, and many only escaped with their lives with great difficulty. A most serious affair occurred a few nights ago. The boys in the Reformatory School Cole wig, mutinied and for an hour kept a large number of warders afc bay. Blank cartridge was fired at them but to no purpose, and at length the door of the dormitory was smashed in with an axe, and an entrance gained. Some rather ugly wounds were received on both sides. No cause is assigned for the outbreak. s
There have been several failures in the gram trade :-S. Houge and Co., liabilities £64,440; W. Rantord, Miller, Knyetton, said to be 4000; W. R. Carter, £12,000. bir J. Coode leaves for New Zealand per lararua on Wednesday next. The building of the new Eastern Market nas been commenced. It will coat £89,000 when completed. . A slight riot occurred on Sunday night, °^" D S t0 the secular preaching o£ pastor Allen in Hyde Park. A large crowd collected, and missiles were thrown at the police, who charged with their batons and hit pretty freely. The steamer Easby ran down the schooner .Northern Light inside the Heads. The schooner sank, but the crew were saved.
