CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present: the Mayor, Councillors Crewdson, Harley, Hounsell, Levieu, and Webb. A letter from Mr Pitt, asking for a refund of the rates paid by Mr Blick," of Brook-st. Valley, on the ground that a portion of the property assessed was outside the Town boundary, was referred to the Finance Committee. The report of the Finance Committee was read. It contained an estimate of the receipts and expenditure for the coming year, snd recommended that a rate of ls in the £ be levied. Cr. Levien gave notice that he would move this at the next meeting, the rates to be payable in half-yearly instalments on the Ist of April and Ist of October. The report of the Public Works Committee recommended that the railway manager be requested to form a crossing to Mr lugham's property; that the widening of the Haven Boad from the Commercial Wharf to the Pilot Station, with a breastwork of totara, be carried out; that the Surveyor's plans of a culvert at the junction of Russell-street and Washington Valley be approved of; that a urinal be erected on the new wharf. Reports from tbe City Surveyor upon roadworks, and upon tbe" extension of the water mains beyond the College Hill were read and referred to the Public Works Committee. The followiug tenders were opened, the lowest being accepted in each case :— For cutting trenches : Thomas and Wise, 19s 6d; F. Atkinson, £1 per chain. For constructing culvert at llussell-street: li. Simpson, £36 17s; J. Hollaud, £37 ss; W. Dement, £38. Eor constructing footpath iii St. Vincent-street: Thomas aud Wise, £123 5s ; Witt aud party, £140 ; Merrick and party, £140. It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Webb that tenders for supplying the timber for the breastwork at Haven lioad should be invited at once. His Worship tbe Mayor was added lo the Finance Committee. | The Council then adjourned.
