It is said that Mr Joseph Ward, at one time M.H.R. for the Wairau, will be a candidate for the seat for Cheviot, which is about to be vacated by Mr Harper. By special request, Professor Hennicke will give another, and his last, performance at the Masonic Hall to-night. The quality of the entertainment, and the lowness of the admission fee, should have the offect of crowding the house.
A narrow escape from drowning was experienced by a sailor belonging to the barque Celestial Queen, who fell between tho regse! and the wharf last evening. In his company was one of the crew of the Woodbine, both being under the influence of liquor. The accident was seen by no one but his companion, who foolishly stood looking at him instead of making an ex«rt\ou on hi« behalf. Fortunately Captain Gaster happened to come on deck shortly afterwards, and haying called the chief officer the latter passed -a rope to the drowning man, and immediately afterwards grasped him by tho neck and hauled him on board a wetter if not a wiser man.
Thb College swimming races canw off yesterday in the pool in th« Maitai near the flax-mill. Pearce; Swimming on back, feet first, Seymour senior ; Consolation, stakes (presented by Mr Hounsel!), Allan. With reference to the above the following "comments by a physical philosopher" have beta forwarded to us: — An argument in f»ror of Darwinism may be shown from these reaulU. Four of the five races were won by the sons of fathers who had formerly been yictorious in election matches for M.H.R. ships. Singularly enough, too, the father of the bast diver (Mr Pearce.of Wellington) has recently shown himself capable of going towards the bottom. Attitudes are hereditary. At the Magistrates' Court this morning, before R. Pollock and H. C. Daniell, Esqs., J. J.P., Florence B. Joseph w»s brought up charged with using threatening language to Morris Levy. The prosecutor did not appear, and the case was dismissed. An information was then laid against the same man by Detective Ede, that he being held to bail to appear at the District Court was about to abscond for the purpose of evading justice. Upon this he was sent to gaol to await his trial.— William Butcher was charged under the Vagrant Act with having no risible means of support. Sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
Tub most delicious dainties are regarded with indifference when the nutaral sauce piquante appetite is wanting. Eating, with those who are never hungry, is a mere mechanical performance not a source of enjoyment. Such persona are, therefore, greatly to be commiserated. They seldom or never enjoy rigorous health, usually suffering from a want of tone and impefect digestion. This want may, however be amply supplied by that splendid appetizer, Udolpho Wolfb's SCHIKDAM AbOMATIO SCHNAPP*.— Advt.
