NELSON INSTITUTE.

To the Editor op the 'Evening Mail.'

Sir— ln your editorial note appended to " C.'s " letter last evening you say that the non-publication of the Institute report has been the means of raising quite a varied crop of correspondents, but there is one variety who have not y«t been heard from, whose existence you seem apparently to have forgotten. I refer to the subscribers to your paper.

You clearly do not deny that the report in question iB a matter of general interest, and it m»y therefore be reasonably assumed that it is so. Your only excuse for not publishing it is the moat extraordinary one, that the Committee of the Institute bad not deemed it necessary to adTertise something else which would have put money into the pockets of the proprietors of your paper. Is this so? Surely there must be a mistake, but it might be well, I think, to afford further explanation on this subject, as this new doctrine may hare some|effect on subscribers ' minds. Let me repeat the question in other words so that there can be no misunderstanding. "Is it a fact that the Nelson Evening Mail (which professes to be a newspaper and not an advertising sheet) refuses to publish reports of meetings of public bodies, admittedly of general public interest, unless the paper derives, either directly or indirectly, a pecuniary benefit for so doing, and, if this is not so, why was an exception made in the case of the Nelson Institute report ? " Yours, &c, A Subscriber to your Paper.
