[press agency] Gisborne, Thursday night. The criminal prosecution against Lawrence and others in the late destruction of property case has occupied the past two days. The Resident Magistrate said that forcible entry was clearly proved. The tenant swore ho petitioned the entry. The case was dismissed, the Magistrate recommending proceedings to be taken against both sides. Duxedin, Tuesday night. Mr Bradshaw reports Bank of New Zea land shares, £23 15s; Colonial Bank, £2 10s National Bank, £3 14s. Mr Macandrew and Captain Fraser arrived overland last night. About 60 gentlemen met the Minister of Lands and gave him three cheers. Sir G. Grey arrives to-morrow afternoon. At a private meeting held relative to the reception of Sir G. Grey and party, amongst the proposals agreed to was a public meeting at the theatre to-morrow, at which the Premier will give an address, and a banquet for Saturday night. The Times denies that Sir G. Grey received a cool reception at luver.cargili. Wellington, Thursday night. Mr Thomas reports produce prices as follows :— Flour, £13 to £13 10s; oats, old, 4s 2d ; bran, Is 2d ; wheat, 4s ; hams, 9,Jd ; bacou, 8d ; cheese, 7d ; potatoes, £5 15s ; pollard, £7 ; maize, 5s ; butter, Is ; bran scarce and difficult to obtain. Buyers are only purchasing old oats to meet present requirements in cousequence of the new crop coining forward. The Wakatipu ha 3 arrived from Sydney aud Melbourne. A sea serpent is reported to have been seen 12 miles north of Fxeeniancle. Statistics have been published showing that that the population of Victoria at the end of last year was 840,300, being an increase over the previous year of 2000. The males are slightly in excess of the females. Friday. The Schooner Canterbury has been wrecked iv Tory Channel, when going from Wellington to the Pelorous Sound iv ballast. She went ashore while anchored for shelter. The crew were saved. All the gear of the vessel was insured in the Victorian Office for £250. She was valued at £500, Oamaru, Thnraday. Wet weather has prevailed for the past three days, seriously retarding harvesting operations. The rain has now ceased, and fine weather set in. With one or two exceptions the wheat crop has yielded well. Several large parcels have changed hands at 4s 3d. Produce quotations — Wheat, 4s to 4s 3d; oats, 3s to 3g 3d; barley, feed, 3s; flour, £11 10s to £12, f.0.b.; oatmeal, £17; pearl barley, £VO, pollard, £5; bran, £4. Invekcahgill, Thursday night. Several deputations waited on Sir G. Grey to-day. One consisting of merchants and importers relative to the bonus on rabbit skins pointed out hotv the £500 on the estimates was miserably insufficient to meet the claims already established, and that the Act distinctly provided for a half-penny per skin. Sir G. Grey promised to consider the question. In reply to a deputation from the Bluff Harbor Board about Sir John Coode's visit. Sir. G. Grey said that Sir John had been engaged for a lump sum by the Australian Government, aud if New Zealand desired to benefit by his advice it would have to pay pro rala. He thought the cost to the colony should not exceed £1500, or about £300 each, for the harbors to be inspected. He also thought it ought to be made a colonial question, and that the Assembly would pas 3 the amount, but if not the various harbors would be responsible. A deputation waited on the Premier for Winton re the two proposed branch lines to the Night-Cap coal reserves, aud from Winton to Otautau. The deputation presented a requisition whiclfSir George promised to consider with his colleagues. A deputation from the Invercargill Town Council also waited upon him about suudry local matters, notably one re a water supply. Sir G. Grey promised to send one of the Government engineers to advise the Council conditional on his expenses beiug paid. Cecil Jacksou late surgeon of the Invercargill Hospital, appeared on remand to-day to hear the decision of the Court. He was committed to lake his trial on a charge of procuring abortion. Bail was accepted, four sureties in £250 each, and himself in £500. lUverton, Friday. The total loss by the Insurauce Offices over the fire yesterday were: — South British £2,700; New Zealand £1300; Norwich Union £1000.
