A Masonic lodge under the Irish constitution will be opened on Tuesday next. The waste lauds sales during February realised £74,668. The police are trying proceedings against grocers for selling locally made wines which have hitherto been looked on as Good Templar drinks, but which analysis has proved to contain 15 per cent of alcohol. At an auction sale to-day the freehold of the Borough Hotel in High-street, the lease of which expires in Dec. 1878, sold for £6500. The freehold of Carl's Empire Hotel, High-street, with 30ffc by 105ffc, leased at £1 per foot, an* expiring in June, 1882, sold for £5,100. The occupier of the hotel was the purchaser in each case. Bishop Moran, in preaching on the Education Act, condemned the secular system, and characterised the Education Act as infamous, and said that no true Catholic could take ac; or part in administering it. Invercargill, Wednesday. Mr Maeandrew arrived this morning, and will bo followed by the Premier and party this evening.
